Hi guys,
first of all thanks for this relearse. I have been waiting for something like this ever since the original Custom & Vintage expansion pack – just with a ‘modern’ level of articulations, and size of sample pool etc etc.
So this is very exciting.
I have a question which stems from this statement on the Toontrack page
The Clubhouse is so different than all modern-day studios. Not only are its rooms of great design, but it has a great Neve 8058 console and the choice of digital or analog.
Is Elliot Scheiner’s State of the Art SDX recorded straight to digital or is there an analog storage medium involved along the way, i.e. tape?
In summary: recorded to tape or straight to digital?
Cheers,
Preben
I do see by a picture of his control room at Clubhouse’s website there is a tape machine on the right hand side of the picture. Don’t know if it was used in the capture or not though. https://clubhouseny.com/recording/

Hi, thanks for the feedback. Tape was not used during the recording of this library.

Thanked by: drumjack52Thank you very much Damian.
This may come as a surprise but being the old fart that I am – with vivid memories of tape when there was no alternative – I am actually very happy to hear that.
Thx
Toontrack advertise this SDX as “acoustic”. What’s so acoustic about this one comparing to other expansions? Would this SDX compliment acoustic music more than the other SDXes for any specific reason? Why would I want to buy it if I’m into acoustic music and have lots of previously released expansions? Thanks in advance guys.

Don’t get hung up on labels. Toontrack could mean acoustic versus electronic drums like from Roland. Take Death and Darkness sdx – it’s not just for metal and works on just about any genre except maybe smooth jazz (think Kenny G). I’ve used it on everything from rock to big band to jazz to progressive (think Rush) to a whole bunch of other stuff. If the demo audio sounds like it could work for you then buy it.

Not really. It has more to do with Elliot Scheiner’s methodology of capturing drums. He’s known for capturing drums without gear like compression. He might apply EQ after moving the mic’s around to get the sound he’s looking for. Thus, he’s getting more natural sounding drums than some other SDXs (although they are great in their own right).

Hey Guys. Thanks so much. Would anyone know if he actually added compression to these samples?
I would guess that he didn’t. He was old school like Al Schmidt. The drums pretty much breathe in this SDX, unlike the harder rock SDXs where the drums are more clamped down.
Damien could probably give you a best answer to your question

Thanked by: MarcinHi Damien, would you know it? I’m contemplating here, unsure if I want to buy this pack yet. Is it really so raw?
The only other thing that I can add here is that if you haven’t watched “The Making of…“ video I cannot recommend this highly enough.
Aside from the fact that Elliot is talked up by the assistant engineer, describing his minimalistic approach, you get a real good sense of not only what the drums sound like, but what they feel like when they move the speakers.

I was testing a new 4:1 sound bar system in my living room and decided to try the above video and these drums were moving around in the room. you could actually feel the drums. Whether it was the Soundsystem or the drums itself, it reinforced the fact that getting this SDX was a good decision on my part. I am already using the various rooms in a few songs.
I would also add don’t take my opinion. Listen to his discography. That will pretty much give you a really good indication of what this SDX will be like.

I agree 100% with Jord. As an e-drummer who is always after the most realistic “acoustic” sounding drums I can get, I find that this is now one of my favourite SDX’s. The video is also awesome and great to see how Elliot’s approach to mic positioning etc is a big part of the natural sound. I still create my own user kit sounds to tailor to what I am doing but the starting position in this SDX is SO GOOD !!

Thanked by: Bear-Faced CowFor more on Elliot’s work take a look at the September issue of Recording magazine as they have an interview with him that’s mostly based on his mixing work with a smidgen of his recording work. The main idea of the September issue is on monitoring so the interview points that way for the most part.

Thanked by: Andrew Payne and Bear-Faced CowAs well, if you haven’t listened to one of the more recent ToonTrack podcasts with Mr. Scheiner, invest 90 minutes of your day. There are some decent nuggets of information.

He was quite purist in his approach. No compression but a little eq here and there.
