I can’t believe that Toontrack seriously put this on the market. We have been playing around with it for a while now and the more we tested it, the more angry we got because this – in our opinion – is very close to being fraud.
The input and output level metering in the plugin gives false (->fake) readouts in order to make it look as if the plugin would level-match the incoming and outgoing signal. Well, guess what: It doesn’t. Any level metering plugin behind EZmix can prove that. By doing this, Toontrack are utilizing the cheapest trick in making the listener think that something sounds “better” by sneakingly adding a few dB on top of the very basic dynamic EQ and compression that is going on under the hood. It is simply impossible to A/B check what it does because B will always be louder. We first thought they used this only for the advertising videos but no, the final product does it. Facepalm.
Wytse of White Sea Studio will have a good one at this soon. What a bummer!
Thank you for your feedback.
I’d like to clarify that we intentionally do not perform gain matching in our software. This is because, in various scenarios, users may want the volume to increase or decrease based on the adjustments they make.
Could you also provide some examples where the output volume displayed in the program is incorrect? This will help us better understand your concern.
Regarding the comment “very basic dynamic EQ and compression that is going on under the hood…” I’d like to point out that this is a bit off the mark. The software actually includes a wide range of effects far beyond just EQ and compression depending on the preset, offering a comprehensive suite of tools for different audio needs.

I wouldn’t go as far as to suggest EZMix3 is snake-oil, but it is quite disappointing that internal loudness-matching isn’t a feature in a plugin of this nature. If all the presets raise the output level by various amounts, it’s difficult to quickly go through the presets to compare them or find what you need. The biggest mistake someone new to mixing can make, is to assess added processing without loudness-matching first.
I can’t comment on Nick’s assertion that the metering is wrong – I don’t really look at them. I just use my ears.

You can easily do your own level matching. There is an output adjustment to adjust the level of your preset and an overall output level fader.
And I wouldn’t go by what anything Wytse says. He’s already laughed at by the audio community.
