I am trying to figure out why I cannot get the toms of any kit to trigger rim only and rim shots correctly. I have a Roland TDX-50x with the Roland VAD-706 triggers, extra floor tom and extra cymbal. I have the Roland TD50x selected as the edrum preset, but the rims of the toms do not trigger the rim only or rim shot sounds in SD3. I’ve tried the learn function to assign the rims etc., but it just does not trigger correctly. any advice?? I also am having a difficult time adding an instrument to a kit (Allaire only has 3 toms…trying to add additional tom and learn to trigger with additional trigger from TD50x.

HI there,
1) What SD3 SDX, Kit and Preset are you using? Which Toms within the Kit and Preset are you using.
2) What kind of trouble are you having adding a 4th tom?

I am using the New York SDX with the Allaire default kit. I have swapped out the kick for New York Avatar 14×24″ GMS with the learn function successfully. The default kit only has 3 toms, so I’ve added an additional instrument (10×12″ ludwig 1962) and am able to “learn” the center hit successfully. When I click on any of the toms and go to the Midi Mapping, it has three different trigger numbers for each tom (Center, rimshot and rim only) with corresponding numbers to map. When I try to “learn” the rim only, I can assign it ok, but the volume of the rim is really low no matter what velocity I strike the pad. I’m not sure how to successfully learn the “rimshot” mapping, or if it’s even possible. The rimshot should be when I strike the rim and head at the same time, but the learn function either gives me rim or center numbers when striking (trying to strike both at the same time). When I play the Roland internal sounds, I am able to get all three trigger positions. I realise that tom rims and rimshots are very rarely needed, but am trying to make the experience as real as possible (being a drummer).
Thanks in advance for any help or insight!

Hi there,
So the is MIDI Note 80. If you open the MIDI monitor and hit the “Rim Shot” on your pad, which MIDI note is being send?
If it’s not 80, then you can either change the note your pad is sending view the “Brain” of the module or change the note in SD3 to whatever the module is sending.

Thanked by: 3davisboyzHi there
To answer your first question about the rim volume, try to increase the level just for the Rim Only articulation using the level slider.

Brad,
Thanks so much for the reply and help. I was able to mask the correct note numbers to the triggers successfully. Still a little confused as to the Rim-shots, but for now, at least it is communicating the trigger correctly. I sincerely appreciate the help!

Thanked by: BradI’d like to add a question to this thread if that’s ok?
I’m playing SD3 with a Roland VAD 506 kit which has the TD-27 module. I have learned how to change the midi note output of the digital snare rim and the tom rims, but when i changed the notes to get the “rim only” sound, the “rimshot” sound no longer triggers at all. So now when i go for the satisfying “rimshot” sound by hitting the rim and the snare head at the same time, i only get the click of the “rim only” sound. So I had to change it back to where the rims of my snare and toms only trigger “rim shot” sounds and the “rim only” sound isn’t available. not very realistic. So, is there a way to address this issue so that i can have “rim only” AND “rim shot” sounds on my kit? Or is it going to be an either-or situation no matter what?
Thanks
-n.
