Hey, y’all!
It looks like my drum module or SD3 is recording two midi notes for most strokes that I play on my e-drum kit. I’ve attached a photo for reference. You’ll see that it looks like I’m playing flams all the time.
I’m completely open to the possibility that I’m an awful drummer who’s learned nothing in 15 years of playing, but apart from that, any theories as to why this is happening? My guess is stick bounce, especially given how close some of the offending notes are, but I’m not sure how to fix that. Mesh heads and rubber cymbals are bouncy!
I’m using an EFNOTE5 e-drum kit to trigger Superior Drummer 3 as a plugin in Logic Pro X on my 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro. EZX Indie Folk version 1.5.0 is making the noise.
To remedy the issue, I’ve tried quantizing all notes to cover up the duplicates, then randomizing all notes to bring back a human feel. Unfortunately, SD3 is so great that notes are saved even if covered up, so this accomplishes nothing; the duplicates just pop right back out upon randomization. I’ve even tried saving, quitting, and reloading my Logic project between quantization and randomization. Doesn’t make a difference; duplicate notes are still saved and ready for editing.
I’d love to find a way to stop the duplicate notes from being recorded in the first place or an edit function within SD3 to easily get rid of them by batch(es)—basically anything other than zooming in on the grid and manually removing duplicate notes one by one…by one…by one…
Looking forward to hearing your responses!
Do read your manual thoroughly. On a Roland it is called Rescan and or Retrigger Cancel. That’s for unwanted repeat notes that happen extremely fast measured within a few milliseconds. Not sure what your brand calls it.
I wouldn’t bother trying to fix the problem anywhere else but the head unit.

Thanked by: Scott EshlemanAw, maan. But that thing’s 50 pages long! I’ll never make it! haha
Probably an excellent suggestion. Thanks.
Have you turned local off on the module?

It definitely sounds like a triggering problem. SD3 can only work with what it receives. I get the odd double when triggering with my td50x but nothing like you get. Quantise is no good as you get a flange sound as the two notes play almost together. I always record my midi in Cubase where you can delete doubles. That gets rid of them. If you have your midi in logic does that have a similar function? Still best to stop them from being transmitted.

It looks like Logic Pro X does have a function to delete doubled midi events. They’d have to be at the same time position, so I’d need to quantize notes 100%, run the function, then apply randomization to make it sound human. I’ve been recording midi solely into SD3 (not into Logic) so that’d involve a bit of a workflow modification.
I agree that the ideal situation would be to stop the notes from being recorded in the first place.
When I get home, I’ll probably try to turn down my pad sensitivity on my kit and see if that changes anything.
Will logic allow you to undo quantise at any time? In Cubase I can hard quantise, delete doubles and then remove all quantising.

Quantization in Logic Pro X is non destructive. Simply remove it when you’re finished and it will be “human” once again.

[YIKES: Apologies in advance, as I just noticed, before submitting this post, that despite my Google search for a solution re: “EZdrummer,” this thread is instead in the Superior Drummer 3 thread. That was not apparent. As an owner of both instruments, I’m fully aware that their features differ. So, please let me know if what I’m describing below exists in SD3—and if anyone happens to know if it also exists in EZD3, I’d appreciate knowing that, as well.]
I appreciate the fact that the discussion, above, was steered toward settings in an electronic kit. That said, is there no way—within EZdrummer 3—to remove duplicate notes?
I have a fully fleshed-out song in which I’ve discovered that a lot of the kick notes are doubled. I don’t know when or how that happened. I’m skilled (Thanks, @Shootie for your videos!) and careful, but something went awry at some point without my noticing until now.
Would sure love a way to select all notes and simply apply a “deflam” command, but there doesn’t seem to be one. Please correct me if I’ve overlooked it. (Interestingly, EZbass does have similar commands.)
Thanks!
It sounds like a very similar situation to mine, despite the difference in software. Unfortunately, I can’t recall what my fix was, but I no longer have the issue. Once it was fixed, I just recorded new takes, so I also don’t have a recommendation for fixing your recorded material. I recommend experimenting with the following:
I feel like some combination of these took care of it for me. Hope they help!
