Hey,
which are your favorite EKX for Traditional Blues?
Think 50’s Electric Chicago Blues / Little Walter / Tomi Leino Trio, NOT Gary Moore / Joe Bonamassa.
The core library with it’s Jazz Bass with roundwound strings is good, but doesn’t do it for me.
Also I found the finger articulations sounds way more appropriate for my use case than pick articulations.
I am not sure about the strings: Flatwounds definitely, but maybe also additionally roundwounds?
EBX Upright is a given, as I definitely want to include Upright Bass in some songs. 🙂
I think a Precision or a Telecaster Bass is the most appropriate electric option, isn’t it?
EBX Session Player with flatwounds and finger articulation on a Precision Bass seems to be the best fit to my ears for my special use case.
And the flatwounds with pick articulations also sound pretty good as an alternative more “articulate” sound.
EBX Americana with it’s fingered and thumb articulations seems to be a great choice (but has roundwound strings).
Could be a nice alternative when having EBX Session Player as main option?
EBX The Sixties was not yet invented in the 50s but with the flatwounds the fingered sound is nice, and the palm muted picked sound in combination with the flatwounds is also nice. But I think the other options might fit better?
EBX Classic Rock the finger articulation is nice, but I think the other options might fit better?
Maybe some hidden gem of a preset in some other EKX I haven’t discovered?
Looking forward to your recommendations!
(I also asked about SDX and EZX (sticks or brushes libraries) for the same use case but for drums in the EZ Drummer and in the Superior Drummer forum.
Maybe you have some recommendations there also?)
Upright is the obvious choice, but Session Player also has a bit of that bluesy taste too—it sounds a bit like a thick fishing line stretched on a plank.
Americana lacks slap articulations, but other than that, it’s a leading all-rounder.
I’m currently contemplating adding Session Player and Americana for country, soft rock, ballad, and acoustic types of music. I’ve listened to hours of comparisons of their DI outputs, and I’ve narrowed my choice down to these two. I already have Upright, Gospel, Fretless, and Acoustic. By the way, the DI output of Acoustic sounds interesting too, but for intense blues tunes I would go for something less “boxy”/standard electric bass.
Personally I would not choose The Sixties or Classic Rock. I also eliminated Hard Rock from my list. If I was to choose one for blues I would go for Session Player. But that’s very subjective, that’s how I hear it.
Remember, you can buy three for the price of two.

Thanked by: Andi SaitenhiebThank you Marcin for taking the time to reply and sharing your thoughts!
It’s nice to hear others came to the same conclusion. 🙂
Yeah, 3 for the price of 2 – and there is even a bundle where you can choose from different kinds of expansions (EZX, EBX, EKX).
I am pretty sure now I’ll take EBX Session Bassist, EBX Americana and EKX Session Organ because the Hammond is also a very nice fit into my style of Blues.
Have a great one,
Andi
