I know this is a hot-button board-warrioring topic for some or one, but it’s still an interesting thing I haven’t found an answer to. I will fully cop to the idea that I’ve screwed something up. Absolutely. If I knew it all I wouldn’t need help, I could just talk down to those that need it, right? 😉 I’m just hoping someone can point me in the right direction or maybe even confirm this is a normal thing.

In this short video you will see me click through a number of china cymbals in the “Search For Instrument” interface. I’m specifically clicking through at least one from each of the library packs installed. Towards then end, I highlight the sound level difference between the Death pack and the Core Library. Those Core Library instrument outputs are all like that for me, tiny whispers and taps, and it carries over into the drum mix. I can’t hear the finer aspects of those samples without cranking my speakers way up. After which, if I decide I like that sound, the only way to make it usable is to push that instruments level to 12
and max out the mixer mic settings
and then eh, it’s theoretically usable, albeit an annoyance to audition in the first place. Am I the only one who has such a radical difference between the Core Pack volumes and the expansion pack volumes (which all seem to have their own levels as well)? Is there anything to normalize this a bit or at all? Or did I bite it on the installs or something? I’m sure I’d love to use some of those sounds but in their current form, I might as well uninstall them.
Thanks For Your Time!
Dan
There’s nothing wrong with your installs. The Core Library is relatively unprocessed in relation to the other libraries as far as recording goes. You are also dealing with different producers and in your example, one specializes in metal. Hence the difference in levels. If you want to bring your kit pieces up to similar level, you would need to apply processing.

Thanked by: dan crawfordThank you for your reply Jordan!
When you say “apply processing”, do you mean post-“Search For Instrument” interface? Or is there something to make even the auditioning levels of the Core Library commensurate with all these other expansions?
Yes, all processing would be considered post. EQ, compression, saturation, etc. Auditioning is often how it was recorded. Not sure if it would audition the kit piece with any processing in a channel (TT would have to elaborate).

An audition mixer channel is actually an interesting idea for a future enhancement of SD3 (or 4).
I just tested the mixer and the processing on the mixer channel appears to be applied to the auditioned kit piece to be used in that channel.

If you want to mix pieces of different kits (I do) then it’s a matter of turning up the core kit pieces individually and the expansion pack down individually. Quite noticeable difference with Rooms of Hansa but easily manageable
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
