Hi all,
I love the drum sound from RATT’s Detonator Album. Does anyone have experience producing a drum sound similar to this in Superior Drummer 3? I have the Fields of Rock SDX as well as the general SD library. Any tips or presets would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Digital reverb and 1176 (and LA-2A) style compression were more prevalent to the 80-90s hard rock drum sound. You’ll want to use a tighter kit and 10-2 o’clock type setting on the attack & release on a compressor. Use a small plate reverb mainly for the snare and a bit of kick and toms.

Thanks Jord!
Is there a kit in the SD library or Fields of Rock SDX that you would recommend?
You need to try the “1981 Classic Reverb” Its a gated reverb that was used on all that 80’s Rock. Im into all the 80’s Rock stuff and have found its the hardest sound to recreate as there aren’t and SDX dedicated to the sound of the late 80’s big drums. I have The Rock Foundry and found a snare in there that I was able to use thats close after some tweaking.
Digital plate reverbs were more prevalent in 80s hard rock than gated reverbs. Gated reverbs were more of the Phil Collins type sound. The drums on Detonator were also heavily compressed. That is really the 80s sound right there. You won’t find a specific SDX for this because it was more about the processing than the recording itself. However, there’s no reason why any kit from Fields of Rock, recorded in the Stone Room, wouldn’t work. Many of them are period correct. Even the core library will work (I’ve built a bunch of 80s kits using the core library).
One of my go-to SDXs is The Rock Foundry. The 60s Ludwig kit, dubbed the hit maker, sets an amazing foundation for 80s rock. The newly released Area 33 Origins sounds like it will easily fit the bill as well. I’m liking what I hear.

Thanks again for the reply!
Ya it definitely seems as if compression is the key, in addition to the reverb choice. I will have to experiment with some of the kits to see if I can get close. There are a couple of presents in the Core library under the metal section that seem to be a good starting point.
With how prevalent the 80s hair metal drum sound is, I am surprised there is not more specific presets for it.

They really weren’t unique in that sense as far as the drum sound went. Everyone was pretty much doing the same production thing and it was starting to boil down to who made a better reverb.
As well, Toontrack has a video on creating the 80s sound. Although it was used on the core library, once you have the core principles of the sound, you can apply the techniques to almost any kit.
