Hey everyone. I own an Alesis DM10 MKII kit. In general I get the feeling that the cymbals on this kit aren’t really the best. Or maybe I am doing something wrong. Either way, could someone give me a few tips on how to optimise the ride and crashes as well as the hi-hat? On most kits that I load in through Ezdrummer, the cymbals sound anemic. Weak attack, barely audible even when I crank up the volume on the mixer. The hi-hat and ride is especially bad in this regard. And getting the crashes to actually crash is an effort. I shouldn’t have to hammer on them so hard to get them to trigger with a good attack. I must be missing something. Which nobs do I have to twist here? 😁
It might be the output of your Alesis. I have no trouble getting cymbals heard.
I too have the same exact problem. I’m looking at the velocity curve as I hit the cymbals and it’s in line with the actual attack I place on Roland cymbals. However, the sound produced is ANEMIC –> low dynamic range. Although the samples itself sounds good, the cymbals doesn’t crash like real cymbals or even compared to drum modules. I tried every trigger settings, velocity, volume, mic level, on all “original kit” kit but I can’t get it to sound decent. Is this an over compression issue or EZdrummer is more for production and not for “real” acoustic drumming? The cymbals just doesn’t sound as good as the snares and toms. Please help…
You probably have to calibrate your velocity hits on the cymbals as well as the output. And yes, you are dealing with recorded drums.

Thanked by: Scott Eshleman and Domingot81Thank you. I realized the problem. The toms and snares were too hot and the dynamic range is too shallow secondary to cheap double-ply mesh heads. I just changed it to premium three ply and the toms and snare no longer drown out the cymbals.
