In SD3 one can record a midi track and access instrument elements by making a drum/preset selection. Then one can build the track by returning to it in record mode and add more elements if desired. When one is done, the track can be exported to a DAW through either midi or audio.
But, what if one wanted to build a more varied total drum landscape with SD3 beyond the elements available in the original drum/preset selection? For example, let’s say one added a couple of elements from one drum/preset selection for one track. But, then one wanted to add other sound elements available in a different drum/preset selection – not to follow the original track but rather to play simultaneously with the first track. Attempting to do this in the same track/drum/preset configuration would not allow this. One would need to create another track layer to “sit on top” of the original track.
Another way to do this would be to export the original track as an audio file and import it into the DAW. Then, open an instance of SD3, make a selection of instrument elements from a different drum/preset, create a new track and record in a SD3 track while playing back the newly created audio file in the DAW. Next, export the newly created track to the DAW and have it on a new track layer “sitting on top”of the other original track layer so that in the DAW they will play back simultaneously.
But, that seems a bit cumbersome. Is there a way of creating layered midi tracks in SD3 to more fully access more of the sound elements contained in the different SD3 drum/preset options simultaneously? If that is possible, how can it be done? Perhaps there is a feature that already does this I’m not aware of. If so, please let me know.
Thanks!
Hi,
multiple simultaneous tracks, layers or lanes is not possible within SD3. What I’d do if I wanted to keep instances to a minimum is to drag the first Track’s MIDI to the DAW, then create a new Track in SD3 and record to it and then let it run in sync with the DAW. You can have plenty Song Tracks in SD3, they just can’t run in parallel at the same time.

Thanks for your reply.
Your suggested workaround is similar to mine. Good idea. The more I kept thinking about it all I thought there has to be a SD3 internal solution to this I’m just not aware of. But, apparently not.
SD3 has so many possible sounds in the different drum/preset options that would be great to layer into one layer or series of simultaneous layers within SD3.
It seems like this is a feature Toontrack could consider for a future release update. For example, audio files or midi files could “sit” on top of each other in the tracks window and then be played together to replicate rich rhythmic or polyrhythmic compilations.
Thanks again for your reply!
You can add lots of extra drums to the kit you are using. You are not restricted to what is on the screen. Not great though to look at the midi if you have percussion and kit on the same lane.
