    Use the envelope property to shape the sound. You can adjust the release for a more natural short tom decay. To add a bit more realism, shift the pitch approx -0.02 cents as the tom is decaying.

    In addition you could try to increase the attack time slightly. Ony a few ms but this tames the attack sound, a little bit like dampening an acoustic drum.

    For the tea towel effect, then yes, increase in attack time.

    I would leave the pitch envelope alone in that case.
