    Hi there,

Let’s simplify things to start with. Quit Pro Tools and run Superior Drummer 3 the application, standalone.

Goto Settings > Audio/MIDI setup, make sure your Alesis is selected in the MIDI Device section.

    Is that working?

    Yes, stand-alone is working.

Great! Just want to make sure MIDI is being received by the host.
So in Pro Tools, create a new session, put a stereo instrument track on it (must be stereo), instantiate SD3, record arm. Does that work?

I’m back in the studio on Friday morning and will try it out, thank you.

I’m thinking the best way (now), is to set up how you described, record on SD3, bounce the tracks and add them back to the pro tools session.

I’d like to be able to record drums/bass or guitar at the same time on pro tools so my reasoning to record direct to pro tools but I’m thinking this can be done at the same time anyway.

It’s all much easier to do it all within the DAW. No messing with tempo tracks etc. it should work just fine in protools. Plenty on here using it that way.

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

FWIW, my workflow in ProTools (and Studio One for that matter) is to record  MIDI on the Pro Tools instrument track with SD3 is inserted on it, in stereo mode. Make any tweaks and adjustments (stereo instrument track) and then if needed, route the SD3 outputs to separate Aux PT channels or bounce to separate audio files and import back into PT. Whatever works best for your workflow.

Make sure that your MIDI inputs and outputs are correct; At the top of the PT track it should display Superior Drummer in the MIDI output selector and “All” or your Alesis Kit as the MIDI input.

    Instrument-View

If you don’t see something similar goto View > Mix Window Views > Instruments

    Select-Instruments-View

Then you can either record arm the track or go into Setup> Preferences > Set Default Thru Instrument to “First selected MIDI Track”

    First-Selected
That way simply selecting the track will make the track audible….

    Hope some of this helps

Besides record arming the Instrument Track, also make sure that your MIDI device isn’t un-checked in the ‘MIDI > MIDI Input Devices’ list.MIDI_Input

To view the Instruments view in the mixer, click the small menu icon in the lower left corner of the PT mixer to see your view options.Instrument_view_mixer

EDIT: seems I was a bit slow on the ‘Submit’ button, Brad beat me to it 😉

Okay guys, got it working and thank you!!

From the Instrument track, I created some Aux tracks, and Audio tracks – bussed everything out nicely and can now record on Pro Tools direct.

Next up; dialing the kit in.

    Thanks to all once again!!
