Nope. A piccolo doesn’t sound like that. You are obviously not a drummer.

Yes I am – it’s one of many instruments I play. And SD3 can do some unreal things with it’s samples that wouldn’t be possible in a real drum.

I just had a listen and they got a point. The piccolo has a lot of depth to it whilst the 7×13 whilst doesn’t and sounds higher pitched (no indication to say it is high tuned like the Tama Brass). Easily could have been an oversight and should be brought to TT’s attention.

It never hurts to contact tech support. Developers, even though it’s their forum, don’t always monitor threads. And the more people that do so will make it more visible and a wide-spread issue.

I’d contact support anyways. Don’t wait for them to come on here. They might not see this. It doesn’t cost anything to log a formal complaint except for the time spent doing it. That way you know it’ll be visible to those who need to know.

With the same heads a smaller diameter drum, such as a 12 or 13″ snare, will naturally be higher pitched than a similar tensioned 14″ drum. The depth of the snare does not affect pitch, which is dictated by head tension, but will affect the timbre. It is quite common for drummers to tune piccolo snares low to achieve a deep fat sound. I was not at the Darkness recording session but it does not surprise me that the 7×13″ Drum Gear snare sounds higher pitched.

Damian, I will have to take your word for that. I played a piccolo snare 30 years ago (!) and at the time they were only used for a high-pitched sound with a sharp attack. I have just made an attempt to find out about modern piccolos, and there is indeed now a type called ‘power piccolos’ which are deep but with a narrower diameter, even down to 10″. So I am willing to accept that the 7 x 13 Drum Gear snare can sound like what I think is a piccolo. However, I am still not convinced that a 3.5 x 14 piccolo can sound like it does in the Toontrack library when it is tuned low. And in any case, the picture you show in the EZX Dark Matter kit is not a piccolo. It is correct in SDX Darkness kit. The sound of the snare is the same in the two kits. See attached screenshots.
