Hi guys,
Is there an EZ way to drag’n’drop audio clips recorded in Ableton Live directly into a Toontrack plugin (e.g. Bandmate of EZDrums or the Audiotracker in EZBass)? I have tried everything I can think of (i.a. obviously via the Explorer/Browser); but the only thing that works is when I export the audio completely out of Live and drag it back in from Windows. That is self-evidently not workable in practice.
I have also tried to copy/paste audio files into the dialogue boxes of Bandmate/Audiotracker, but that doesn’t seem to work at all.
Also, I wonder if there is a clever way of dragging MIDI between Toontrack plugins placed on different tracks. In Live only the plugin(s) on the selected track is open, that saves screen real-estate, but then the target plugin for the drop is closed…. It is probably just a setting in Live (so maybe wrong forum), but maybe someone could give me a hint.
Thank you in advance!

I am having the same issue, wondering if you got any answer or support to fix it? As it’s the primary reason I bought ezdrummer 3 in the first place and so far bandmate isn’t letting me drag and drop anything
Hi Josh,
TT basically says “it’s Live’s fault”, which seems plausible, yet not particularly satisfactory. The only workaround (apart from exporting) I’ve found so far is to close the project after recording your clips in Live and reopen the project. Then they can be “dropped”, but that is not a practical workflow. For whatever reason there seems to be something “temporary” about the freshly recorded clips in Live, which the TT plugins do not like. Please help me to nag Ableton (and TT 😉 on the matter, so the issue can be resolved. This way, they have little value for me.
Have a nice weekend!

I have some last minute breaking news, i.e. if I do the following:
1) Record a clip
2) Go to the clip view
3) Right-click on the clip link and select “manage sample file”
4) In the list of clips select “edit” (the clip goes offline)
5) Immediately de-select “edit” again (the clip is back online)
Then the clip can be dragged into EZdrummer!
It is still (too) cumbersome, but it is much better than any of the other workarounds so far.

Thanked by: Juan Carlos AndradeHi V thanks very much for the info and sorry about my late reply. I will have to nag Ableton but in the meantime that actually does seem like a suitable workaround for the time being, as the only other way I’d found thanks to another users suggestion was going into the clips folder and finding the specific clip you were looking for by name and drag and drop from there. I gave that a go and it seems to be working that way but it does mean you have to cross reference the full track title i.e. ‘Mid Guitar 2103934’ and it is a pretty annoying procees so I will try this.
Thanks very much for your help (: Will post again if I find any other information or solutions
Hi guys. I was searching online for solutions as I have the same issues regarding Ableton and EZDrummer3 Bandmate. I’m new to both EZDrummer and Ableton so lots to troubleshoot for me. But I can confirm that VRN’s solution above does indeed work! Thanks for posting it on here! It really is a lifesaver so far because Bandmate is one of the main reasons for choosing Toontrack here. Hopefully TT and Ableton can come together and patch a quick fix as I imagine many others are probably having the same issue. Seems to me like it might be Ableton’s way of storing and/or naming temp files/clips but not entirely sure. Either way I think it really should be a pretty quick and easy fix.
Cheers,
What a bummer – it was working in Live 10, and I just bought EzKeys, only to find out it’s botched in Live 11 which I use now. It ruins the workflow to a VERY large degree. Had I seen this before investing in EzKeys, I probably wouldn’t have forked out the money for it. Ouch 🙁

In Preferences, go to Plug-Ins and check that Multiple windows and Auto-Hide are correctly set. Besides that, most DAWs prevent stuff being dragged from the DAW to a plug-in but not the other way around. Overlapping Toontrack plug-ins windows solves the dragging from one plug-in to another plug-in.

Reviving this thread with a suggestion: For those of us who still utilize midi inside of Ableton, allowing users to paste midi into the bandmate section would be very useful. Currently, I need to export midi as a file and then open it inside EZ_. This is a bummer.
Hi bm9000,
as stated earlier in this thread (and other posts on the Forum), to be able to drag audio and/or MIDI from the DAW to a plug-in is not something controlled by the plug-in but restricted by the host. Most hosts do not allow for this but there are exceptions. Perhaps change is on the way, e.g. Avid just changed the latest version of Pro Tools to allow for dragging audio clips to plug-ins, so maybe that opens up for MIDI d-n-d as well. And if one DAW makes changes like this to improve user workflow, others might follow.
If you only wish to get MIDI from your DAW’s track to a Toontrack plug-in’s Song Track, you can hit Rec in the plug-in, then play back the DAW timeline to get the MIDI there, without needing to export MIDI then Import.

I am having the same issue… interestingly, this worked fine in Ableton 10 and 11.
Since Ableton 12, it has stopped working so I have no other option but to export the clip (makes for a slightly annoying workflow).

Hi James,
recording from the DAW to the plug-in as described above doesn’t work for you?
