Copy midi from one Superior Drummer instantiation to another in the same session

Simple way would be to delete the existing SD3 instance on the target track and then option-drag the SD3 instance with the edited grooves to the track that has/had the second SD3 replacing the existing instance. Things become a  bit more complicated if the kits are different in each. I’d make a kit preset (if you haven’t already) of the kit that’s in the second SD3 track then do the dance I describe in my first sentence and then recall the kit preset.

You must have a screaming system to be able to run two SD3 instances (lots of ram or streaming from a fast SSD) at one time.

what @drumjack52 replied is the simplest and most straight forward approach. Another option is (if you are doing all your editing in one SD3 and just wanting the second to “follow along”) is to drag the MIDI to the PT track of the second plug-in. That works. The AAX protocol just doesn’t let you drag back to a plug-in.

Another option you have is to enable MIDI out on the 1st SD3 plug-in (In settings > General)

Then in pro tools in the track for the 1st SD3 plug-in in the MIDI Output Selector (at the top of the track) select the second SD3 plug-in Channel 1

That will play the MIDI from the 1st SD3 plug-in in both it and the 2nd plug-in.

    Just a thought…..

I’ve tried this MIDI out routing in the past but get latency. The drums are out of sync. I’m using Logic Pro on an M1 Mac so should have plenty of horsepower. Any tips? Thanks.

Your latency issues in Logic could be a result of a number of things including latency inducing plug-ins to delay compensation settings, along with sample buffer sizes.

However, there are other ways you can go from one instance of SD3 to another instance. While Logic won’t support copy & pasting between plug-ins the AU standard in MacOS will allow you to drag your midi regions from one instance’s timeline to another. As well, you can also use Logic’s capabilities to control both instances using a single set of regions using various methods, such as track stacking and ghost/alias regions..

I found this thread because this is precisely what I’m attempting to do—except it’s not working. I need to copy the kick part from one instance of EZD3 to another instance of EZD3. (NOTE: I realize this is an SD3 forum. Although I did a Google search for this topic in EZD3, it brought me here. I do own both products, but I’m currently working in EZD3. I’m assuming that MIDI drag-and-drop should work similarly in both.)

Exactly how would one drag a MIDI region from one instance of SD3 to another? When I attempt to do so, the second instance is not “seeing” or recognizing the dragged MIDI. Is there a special trick?

Overlap the 2 instances. You pin the first one, like the blue tack in the upper right of the screen print. ( I assume you are working in a DAW)

This is Studio One but it should work in PT as well. I can fire it up if need be. Was just working on something else.

I appreciate your reply. Took me a bit to figure out what you were suggesting—and yes, your suggestion does work for the song track.

But I’m attempting to copy only the kick part from one instance and then paste it to the kick track of another instance. When I select all of the kick events, I can choose Copy, but then, when I switch to the second instance, the Paste command is grayed out. Also, when I attempt to drag the kick part from one instance to the other, nothing gets dragged at all. (But when I drag from the song track, as you suggested, an outline of the MIDI immediately appears, allowing me to drop it wherever.)

Unfortunately, I need to do it the way I’m describing because the destination instance already has some MIDI that I need to preserve. So, I can’t just overwrite that MIDI with the MIDI from the song track of instance 1.

Sadly, it appears Toontrack has not enabled drag-and-drop of a single MIDI element. Although there are powerful ways to copy just the kick part (or any other element) and then paste them elsewhere in the same instance, there appears to be no way to do this between two instances.

    Thanks again for your reply.

On your target instance, open a new track (the little plus sign) on the left of the track, drag and drop to the new track and then you should be able to cut and paste to your desired track. Let us know if that works….

Thanks, but it does not work. After copying from one instance, when I go to the second instance, the paste command says “Clipboard is empty.”

Works great, I do it all the time. Drag and drop from one instance to an empty track in the target instance and copy and paste the one instrument to the desired track.

    Yes… there is.

    No, there is not.

Please read my original posts carefully!

The feature you’re describing only works within one instance! If I copy the kick track from one instance, then switch to another instance, the paste commands do not work. SD3 and EZD3 both say that the clipboard is empty! The clipboard is not shared between instances.
