I’m attempting to use Tracker.
What appears to be the case with Tracker is in order to turn audio into midi, each drum element needs to be recorded separately in its own audio file and added in the Tracker window as a separate audio file. What I’ve been attempting to do is to add one audio file to Tracker that contains several drum elements mixed into the one drum file. This does not appear to be working. My guess is that the separate drum elements must be on their own separate audio files when imported into Tracker.
Is that true? Or is there a way to use Tracker with one mixed audio track containing several drum elements? If that is possible, how is it done?
If Tracker cannot do this, is there any other way of doing it?
Thanks!
Yes I did it. Here’s the video that got me started. It’s not a skill learned quickly. You gotta keep trying until you learn how.
Thanks for the link!
I’ll give it a try.

You are welcome! It gets easier each time you try. In the video, he stops talking and demonstrates. When he does, watch closely. He does a great job.
Hello,
I’m giving it a try and it is starting to work. One of the problems I’m running into is selecting the right Sound Recognition option. This requires a more seasoned knowledge of different drum sounds and emulations.
I love good drum sounds, but I have a lot to learn about what sounds on the audio track are being made by what drum elements in SD3 and with what particular expression. Sure, I can tell a kick from a cymbal. But, all the manifestations of sounds in between I’m not sure about.
Any tips on how to more easily match up sound expressions in SD3 with sounds in the audio file?
Thanks!
One tip that I know is this: The kick and snare usually play opposite of each other. If the kick is on 1 and 3 then the snare is usually on 2 and 4. The toms can be anywhere; however, they usually sound at special places in the song like endings of choruses and verses and during bridges. If it all else fails, use separation software to create a drum only track of the song. Then place that track in SD3. I do this and it helps. If you have iZotope RX, it has a separation module. Moises and MelodyML are also excellent separation programs. There are also some freebies out there too.
This is very interesting and helpful. Of the software options you mentioned, is there any one that would be of more help in what I am trying to do than others, or are they all about equal? Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help!

Ok I didn’t state that clearly. The options I mentioned do not replace SD3. Those options allow you take a song and separate the percussive parts (kick, snare, tom) away from the song into a new audio clip. You then import the new audio clip into SD3 Tracker. This will make the percussive parts clear and SD3 tracker can easily distinguish the different percussive parts for you to work with.
I’ve reviewed the software options suggested. They all seem to be able to isolate things like vocals and bass from a music mix. But, what is not clear to me is which might be able to separate and identify different drum elements in a mixed drum sound file.
Do any of them do this and if so, which might do it and do it well?
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I think none of them can separate the different drum elements. I wished they could! But they do deliver drum track free of any other sounds. This drum track then works better in Sd3 Tracker than the original. In SD3 Tracker, you can now more precisely identify which trigger belongs to which drum element.
You will still have to do a lot of rebuilding though when using a full drum mix. It’s never going to be perfect except if it’s very simple kick snare hi hat.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
That’s all very helpful.
From above – ” This drum track then works better in Sd3 Tracker than the original. In SD3 Tracker, you can now more precisely identify which trigger belongs to which drum element.”
Of the software mentioned – iZotope RX, Moises and MelodyML – does any one of them do this better than the others or are they all about the same?
Thanks!
