Hi everyone, I’m fairly new here and need some help with the following:
when I map my TD-30 v-drums to SD3, using the preset that’s built in to SD3, all seems well.
However, when I hit my snare drum on the v-drums, and when I click the virtual snare in the software to hit it, the sound is different. Clicking the snare drum with my mouse in the software seems to sound snappier/harder. Is this a velocity thing? However hard I hit the real snare drum on my v-drums, i cant get it to sound exactly the same.
Curious to hear your thoughts on this!
(and possible solutions)
Reduce the velocity range from 127 to 90, i. e. Drag the right 3 points to the left in the curve editor

Thanked by: tendingtropicClicking on the screen does not really give you a really precise “velocity sensitive” performance of the kit drum piece. It’s true that depending on the area clicked you might get different velocity samples. – I agree with this previous comment

– You can edit the velocity curve so that your Virtual Drum Kit reacts with a non-linear curve. – But you can always edit your recorded drums and then scale the velocities of each drum piece. I suppose it’s more convenient to adapt your kitdrum pieces’ velocity curves so that you hear the result you’re going to record. Just save your kitdrum patch with the velocity curves you’re planning to use in your song(s).

Thanked by: tendingtropicSet the td30 triggers up correctly to get 127 on hardest hits. Don’t expect to get the same same sound on a softer hit. Getting the module triggers set up correctly is the first step. The td30 internal engine is much more forgiving to poor setup. SD3 dynamic range is much better. If you do this and are still not happy then try changing velocity curves. I personally would not restrict dynamic range by reducing the velocity range.

Thanked by: tendingtropicThe stock SD3 library is very soft/low volume even at full velocity 127, you need to modify the curve/velocity range
The curve wouldnt change the sound of a 127 hit. That’s as loud as it gets no matter what curve.

Not the sound but the volume and easiness to reach it, I hit my snare as hard as I can and I can’t never get 127, increasing sensitivity on the module to get more volume is wrong, reducing the dynamic range by modifying the curve is the only solution that works for me, if you’re a heavy hitter and reach 127 easily well that’s another topic…
Also that’s why I mentioned the core SD3 library is very quiet even at full 127, compare it to the Fields of Rock, hit your drum to get 127 and it will hurt your ears, so saying 127 is the loudest doesn’t always apply…
Limiting the velocity range will not decrease dynamic range. The samples’ volume will be scaled accordingly, preserving the entire dynamic range of the mic.
Not sure I agree with that but I wont argue the point

Yeah, it’s like the “top velocity” function of the mimic pro, where you hit the pad as hard as you play and the value gets set accordingly even if you reach only lets say half the range the full dynamic range will be available for your playing style, a 12 year old kid will hit differently than a full bearded 45 motorcycle dude… the 12 year old won’t reach 127 but will enjoy the full volume and dynamic range.
But you would then set triggers for a 12 year old. The td30 has different bands of trigger settings you can use. It’s not the way I do it in SD3. It doesn’t feel natural to me
