Hey, just trying to make sure I understand this right. Please forgive my frustration if I’ve got something wrong here, but I’ve done some googling and this is how I understand it…
I bought the Custom Shop EZX for those beautiful custom drums, loaded it into SD3, and found the studio room replaced by the generic SD3 backdrop, and all the drums replaced by black, generic placeholder drums. I googled the issue and found that yes, EZX drums and rooms/backdrops are represented in SD3 by plain placeholders in SD3. I paid $50 for these beautiful drums and I’d like to see them! Especially those gorgeous Craviotto’s.
I’ve had this issue with a couple other EZX’s, but I figured it was some issue on my end, and didn’t care enough about their looks to investigate. But this time, I bit the bullet and bought EZdrummer 2. I think of these drum packs as a long-term investment, and I don’t want to feel my experience is limited to only audio. It’s worth the added expense to me to get the full experience. Also, I was thinking of buying the Twisted Kit expansion, and it seems important with such unique sounds to be able to see what you’re playing with that one.
So I loaded it up and could see the Q drums. When I select the Craviotto’s… I still see the Q’s. Arg! Frustrating. Lesson learned: In EZdrummer, not all drums are photographed. Started playing… and realized my 2nd floor tom was triggering a crash cymbal and not the floor tom standing there in the image. Tried to reprogram it and couldn’t figure it out. Back to Google… and learned that no, you can’t MIDI remap in EZdrummer.
So let me get this straight. EZX room images and drums in SD3 are tragically replaced by generic placeholders, stripping away part of the experience. And yet in EZdrummer, you can’t MIDI remap, which is like sitting down at particularly-oriented drumset and not being allowed to move anything. This leads me to feel like I can’t get full functionality either way, whether within the intended EZdrummer environment or even the more expensive SD3 one.
These both seem like basic functionality things to me. I understand Toontrack wants to sell copies of SD3, and not allowing MIDI remapping within EZdrummer is one way to create upgrade demand. But honestly, that seems to me like a very fundamental thing to handicap. This is a $150 piece of software! I shouldn’t have to go find a workaround, and I shouldn’t have to rewire my drums just to fit EZd2 – I’ve put in hours to get them set up like I want them within other environments – including SD3!
And then on the other hand, OK, so let’s say I bite the bullet and upgrade to SD3 – now I can’t see any of the instruments!! Why not just at least overlay the EZX backdrop and instrument image over the SD3 interface so we can at least see what we’re playing (when photographed)? Even if it’s scaled differently – I think people will understand, as it’s meant for a different piece of software. Just to erase the aesthetic seems to me like the less desirable choice.
Frustrated. Please correct me if I’m wrong!
