Hi all i have spent a lot of time looking in to this only to find a simple answer myself (well I think so). The ride cymbals on SD3 are always too quiet and murky and cannot really be controlled well. One of the problems is that when you sample the cymbals and choose one the sound changes completely when it moves to the OH mics. Most noticably there is no stick tip click on the ride, just a general bow sound.
The answer for me was to download a simple free light ride cymbal sample and drag it on to the ride in SD3 to create a stack. I have attached a royalty free sample. Then i can mix the tip click into the overall sound. Works really well… just though I would share.
I agree that some of the SD3 core library Ride cymbals don’t have “bright” bow tip articulations. I do a few things to get around this. 1) choose ones that do have brighter tip articulations (and some SDX expansions have much better ride cymbals. 2) set up a dedicated ride channel so you can control better 3) adjust the four key volume areas – level in drums tab and velocity curve), close mic audio level in ride channel, ride bleed level on OH and any ambience channels that you choose to bleed the ride into, fade level in ride channel and I use a ride Bus so fader level for this and also a dedicated ride output channel so another fader to adjust. I have attached an over the top example of a loud and heavy ride just to show (not mixed just raw to show strong ride can be). This ride is my favourite – from The Progressive Foundry – 21″ Sabian Will Calhoun Signature Luna Ride
Dell Precision 7730, i7 6 Core 2.6 GHz, 128GB RAM, 1TB SSD and 3 x 2TB SSD, Windows 11, Cubase Pro 14, SD3 plus a variety of SDX's and EZX's, Orchestral Percussion, EZBASS, RME BabyFace Pro FS and KRK V4 monitors. Modified Yamaha DTX900, DTXPRESS4 and Edrumin10 triggering SD3. Yamaha pads/cymbals and Roland VH-10 HiHat. PDP Maple acoustic kit for live playing.
For me, the 21″ Sabian AA Rock Ride from the Drums of Destruction EZX fits for a majority of the kits I need the ride for. Otherwise, I was not a fan of that EZX.

Check this video explaining the procedure of separate tracks to cymbals and rides
Then you can process them separately in your DAW
Hope it helps

Thanked by: luca labruzzoHi Zepnut,
Can you share where you found that royalty free sample? I really like it and would like to use them for stacking.
Thanks in advance

The acoustic ones in this download are fine for this purpose.
Cheers

All of the cymbals in the core library are recorded raw, which means that they have all of their frequencies and transients intact. Proper use of EQ and compression will get you the clarity and dynamics you need in a mix.
