In Superior Drummer 3, Crash Cymbal output is sent to HiHats track.
I find it difficult to mix both Crash and HiHats in same track.
Is there any way to separate Cymbals into a separate track in Superior Drummer 3?
Please suggest.
You can get a cymbals-only wav easily enough. Assuming your cymbals are routed to (say) the OH condenser mikes, you can either turn off the bleed of everything except the crashes, in the UI, or solo the cyms in the grid editor. Then run out via bounce and your oh cond file will be a cyms-only stereo wav.
That’s how I’ve done it when running out kit wavs for use in DAW. I did the same to get a stereo ride-only track as well. That doesn’t mean I’ve removed the cyms from the standard oh mics, coz I haven’t. But if a cymbal gets lost in a dense mix you can touch it in with those.
You may be able to do a route instrument mics job on your cyms, but I’ve not really messed with that much so far, mainly because the cymbal panning in SD3 seems to be set for each cymbal.
I do not believe you are listening to a crash hit through a Hi-Hat track. That’s preposterous. Within any Superior Drummer 3 library, cymbals are NOT routed to the Hi-Hat track. Cymbals are always “routed” (I’m using inverted commas because they do not have a single channel) to the Overhead (OH) channel and the Room channel (Depending on your SDX library, you may have more than one room channel mic(s)). You MIGHT have “bleeding” activated for the hi-hat track and the sound of that crash cymbal “bleeds” into the Hi-Hat microphone, but that can be fixed by going to the “bleed” parameters and turning down the bleeding.
Anyway, my first thought was: “Is this guy sure that it is a CRASH Cymbal?” (Hint: play your MIDI drum track while you’re looking at Superior Drummer 3’s drum kit screen – if when that “crash” is heard, the Hi-hat lights up, then it IS a full-open Hi-Hat hit) – Some fill grooves in the main MIDI library use a full-open Hi-Hat hit – which might sound like a crash cymbal, but it is actually a Hi-Hat hit. So, it is routed where it should be. In this case, you should edit the MIDI track and swap the full open Hi-Hat hit for an ACTUAL crash hit. You may edit the velocity, too.
You are going to have to be more specific. Are you referring the Hi-Hat channel strip, ambient channels, bus or output channels? Or it may be a combination of all of the above. Perhaps check your Mix tab and see where everything is routed, and set up mix routings as you wish. However, remember that drums need to be viewed (and mixed) holistically and it is natural for hi-hats and cymbals to be coming from similar channels such as OH.
Again, you need to be more specific and provide some more details (such as any preset you are using, or post a ZIP of your own).

As far as rerouting the cymbals, I always reroute the ride cymbal because I like having the ride on its own channel.
I actually route all of my cymbals and rides to a new separate channel for each and also include in OH as well. That way I have full control.

That’s a good idea. How do you do that –> route each cymbal to its own track?
Yeah exactly that. Eg I route the ride to a ride channel (that I create) that bleeds into OH, the Crash to a Crash channel (that I create) that also bleeds into OH and so on for as many cymbals that I use. See screenshots.
Only issue is it increase the RAM demand but I have 64GB RAM so still useable with low latency.

I almost always use the master sample volume slider of the actual instrument in the “Drum Kit” window. its so much easier. Not sure why you would not use this. It can also be automated. It’s a far easier way of riding cymbal volumes than dealing with all the new channels and bleed and room tone and fx being possibly bypassed
Sometimes i do route the cymbals to their own mixer channels, but that is usually to bypass compression issues on the kit.

I do the same thing as well. It all depends on what you want to do and flexibility required. Main reason I use an OH AND a separate (own) channel for cymbals is to have some independence from the “normal” OH only routing when I record to a multi-channel output routing. I output to a “cyms” and “ride” channel as well as OH and create the same channels in my DAW. By having a separate cymbal channel I can have some independence from OH and gives greater mixing control in my DAW. I can increase OH to bring up the drums and reduce individual cyms channels so cymbals aren’t too overpowering. The beauty of SD3 is lots of different ways to achieve an outcome so no right or wrong way. cheers, Andrew

When I route, say, the ride to its own channel, I only have that option for a close mic. In your graphic you also have an ‘OH All’ channel. Is that another channel you create? Is it a bus, into which the various overhead channels are routed?
