Is it possible to activate the song start/stop playback function using an external drum pad? I can easily do it (using MIDI learn in SD3) on my MIDI keyboard control knob but when trying with my Alesis ControlPad the MIDI learn doesn’t seem to get any input. The pad works fine for playing the drum pads in SD3 I just can’t get it to trigger the play/stop function.
An additional question. I basically want to be able to start/stop samples and loops using the Alesis pad. Is there a better way for doing this than just having it start/stop individual SD3 song tracks?
Wow, a difficult question. I guess Drum Pads are just meant to be used to trigger Drum Sounds. I’d say it is not possible to do so, at least from the SD3 standalone version. You do not mention if you’re using the VST version from within a DAW. Some DAWs (like Reaper) allow you to set your MIDI devices as MIDI INPUT only or both as MIDI + Control Surface. That way, you can set up, say, a “play” button on your MIDI keyboard to start up your sequencer (refer to your DAW’s Manual on how to configure controls). I’m not sure you can use a regular MIDI pad from your Alesis ControlPad to start up your sequencer… maybe the “function” button could be assigned from within your DAW as a “start/stop” button for your projects. I don’t know.

I’m using SD3 as a standalone but could use Logic Pro as DAW if needed. I just like the idea of being able to stay in SD3. I’ll try your advice and use a DAW to see if that can make it work.
If anyone else has an idea of how I might be able to do it within SD3 I’m all ears. I have a hunch it is related to the Alesis sending a Momentary and not a Toggle MIDI message but I’m not sure and if that’s the case I can’t see where to change it.
Logic will indeed recognize midi commands to start and stop the sequencer. However, there is a catch: you would have to set up your drums as a control surface, which would mean that they would no longer be a midi instrument. Your best bet is to get some sort of midi floor controller to control Logic and not do it by the drum kit.
there are also utilities out there that will convert midi commands into key commands. You would be able to control standalone with that.
