I’ve been trying to get the main drum sound off of Refused’s The Shape of Punk to Come album for a while. I’ve gotten somewhat close using the Legacy of Rock expansion, but not nearly where I want it to be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start? Any presets? Any expansion suggestions that might get me a lot closer?
On another note, are there any expansions with a ride cymbal with a bell that’s worth a s***? None of the rides on either expansion that I own have an audible bell and it would be great to have a dedicated ride channel in order to process it to stand out better. Or am I just doing something wrong?
Thanks

Reason: grammar
Haven’t listened to Refused enough to help you on that.
When I want a bell ride my goto since being released is the “Custom and Vintage“
20″ Paiste* Sound Creation Bell Ride
Seems to cut through anything.

Thanked by: billyMy favourite ride (and bell) is the 21″ Sabian Will Calhoun Signature Luna Ride from The Progressive Foundry SDX. It is a killer !
I have set it up with a dedicated ride channel and ride Bus so I can process it how I like ! I actually use it in all my “user” kits in all my expansions (but I also have 2 other rides in each kit to get variety). I am an e-drummer and use Yamaha DTX900 (with extra pads/cymbals) to maximise the trigger outputs I have available (39 in total – as most cymbals have 3 triggers for bell/bow/cup and most pads have head/rim1/rim2).
Dell Precision 7730, i7 6 Core 2.6 GHz, 128GB RAM, 1TB SSD and 3 x 2TB SSD, Windows 11, Cubase Pro 14, SD3 plus a variety of SDX's and EZX's, Orchestral Percussion, EZBASS, RME BabyFace Pro FS and KRK V4 monitors. Modified Yamaha DTX900, DTXPRESS4 and Edrumin10 triggering SD3. Yamaha pads/cymbals and Roland VH-10 HiHat. PDP Maple acoustic kit for live playing.

Thanked by: billyWell if you’re into punk or hardcore, the album is definitely worth a listen! It’s a masterpiece in my opinion, everything from the production to the writing. But thanks, I’ll give it a shot! There’s not a way to mix and match shells and cymbals from different expansions is there?
How do you set up the dedicated ride channel? The ride only appears on the OH and room channels on both the core and Legacy of Rock kits (I guess I only have the one expansion) so there’s not a way to process it separately. I don’t play myself so I write midi drum parts. I could have a separate instance of the program with only the ride loaded I guess, but that would start to get clunky in my DAW

Here’s a previous thread that may help with creating a separate channel for a ride.

Yes you can replace(or stack with) a current kit piece with ones from another SDX or add pieces to a kit/preset in addition to the current ones, with add instrument in the upper left of the drums tab.

Thanked by: billyOh wow, just realized the EZMix Dirt pack is Pelle Henricsson, who actually worked on the album… it’d be great if Toontrack did an SD3 expansion for him or if he at least had some producer presets for it
I use different approaches for different SDX’s for a dedicated ride channel. In SD3 with lots of ambience channels I tend to use one of these channels (I convert OH Cond to ride) and then I bleed to OH and other ambience channels as required. Some SDX’s already have dedicated ride channels (Death & Darkness, Progressive Foundry, Rooms of Hansa). I also use an ambience channel for ride on Metal Foundry (I convert Mono Far to ride).
Because I am a Drummer I am fussy about drum sounds and use processing in all libraries (incl SD3 Core) and can bring out powerful drums even in SD3 core through use of ambience channels, processing on channels, routing to busses, parallel reverb and parallel compression channels. This is without processing available on the DAW. It does take time and effort to learn and is a never ending journey with all the parameters available for tailoring sounds (and feel). Velocity curves and settings within e-drum module give even more options to alter the “power” in the sound.
SDX’s can shorten this journey for certain genres but once again the flexibility to tailor sounds is amazing.
One thing I can recommend for anyone playing E-drums is the Hi-Hat fix available from MintberryCrunch. This has greatly increased the realism in “feel” and sounds with the Hi Hat in SD3/SDX and I am using a Yamaha RHH135 which is a lower spec Hi Hat than some of the newer Roland Hi Hat options. RHH135 only has open and closed in the original DTX900 module but Martins fix allows the Hi Hat transitions in SD3 to be used with this hardware – Awesome ! Sorry for rambling !
