Is it possible to control, or manipulate the tail of a sample in ED 2? I have a softer part in a song where the sustain of the kick and snare is to loud.

You would have to choose a specific Library Preset that happens to have that particular effect. For example the Modern Kit with the Distorted Library Preset. On the Mixer Tab in this case there is a “Tighten” knob.
Otherwise you’d have to do some routing in a DAW and add your own dynamic effects to achieve this. I do this all of the time to keep my Toms from sustaining too long. Or if you cross-graded to Superior Drummer 3, it does this natively with it’s built-in Envelope adjustments.

My amateur approach would be to make two tracks in your DAW. Take the midi you created from EZD2 and put it on both tracks. Cut the tail off the midi in the first track and only use the tail end on the second half, adding the effects you need to both separately. But that’s me.
Another option would be to apply this process at a later mix-down stage with use of a noise gate and/or compressor, whether that is applicable or suitable in this instance or not..?
