Heyaz, I’ve been using SD3 for about 3 months and getting great results… Was just wondering how others are using it. I’ve been using the included kits with minimal changes to their mix, sometimes just adding various extras. But not really fiddling with the SD3 Mixer. I am doing multi channel out into Logic and then processing and bussing in Logic.
It occurred to me the other day that because I’m using the premade kits, maybe I’m doubling up on EQ and Dynamics. Whilst I’m happy with the end result, I was also thinking about using the kits raw samples without any processing in the SD3 mixer, and doing it 100% in Logic or as a parallel mix to some extent.
Just curious on people’s approaches!
I do both. If I use a preset then I tweak the preset but don’t use my own effects on top except maybe bus compression lightly. I tend to use dry kits though and do my own processing in Cubase. I do all my midi in Cubase as well
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
For me, it is all in context with this song. Very rarely will I use a factory preset, but when I do I will take it and modify it. I do, however, make user presets from my drum mixes as I have found that some of them provide a jumping off point. For the most part, I am able to do the majority of my drum mixes within SD3. However, when I need something along the lines of say a Helios console emulation, I will then route everything into Logic and work there and save a project template for future mixes.

Thanks for all the feedback… I’m using Logic Studio are largely a writing tool and instrument, getting the song assembly how i want it, then bouncing everything out into Harrison Mixbus so using its built in compression and EQ with some parallel compression in a mixbus, pretty standard stuff. Just hadn’t given much thought really to modifying the preset kits I’m using other than adding a shell or cymbal.
Is there a way I can take the effected kit post its built-in effects through one set of SD3 mixer outputs into Logic, and another completely dry/pre anything outputs at the same time?
Either way I’m going to tear up one of my mixes and do it again fresh with this in mind!
That would require setting up parallel bus outputs for each kit peace, in which you would have one dry and the other with effects. One bus would send into the other pre-fader and pre-effect. If anything, it seems a bit overkill for me, but it is your mix in this case. you would also have to remember that Logic has an output limitation on its auxiliary channels of 16 per instrument for SD3. This might change in the future, but until then, you are pretty much stuck with that limitation for the moment.
One other solution would be to use two instances of SD3 in a track stack. One instance can have your effects in the other one can be dry. Each of them can have their own outputs.
