I usually start with a PT template that includes SD3 inserted on a stereo instrument track and 15 stereo aux tracks routed to the 16 stereo channels on the SD3 mixer, that way no matter what kit I change to, switching to multi-channel within the SD3 mixer will always route to a channel in PT. Now because different kits have different routing, there’s no “standard” way to label your aux channels (I use SD3 Out1/2, SD3 Out3/4… etc). For example Rooms Of Hansa, RotoTom Alt preset has a “Ride” channel, that other kits do not and it is routed accordingly.

That being said most times you can count on kick on 1/2, snare 3/4. Hope this helps a little.

I just want to add that you do have an option to ‘Keep Output Routing on Preset Change’ in the Preset drop-down menu.

On top of this, you can also click on the drop-down arrow of a preset and select what part of a preset to load. This you can load just the kit without changing the mix routing. You can also load complete kits available in the Preset Part submenu items at the bottom of the preset drop-down.

Thanks John.  This does not preserve the Buss and Output structure but does correctly keep the individual drums/mics routed to direct outputs. The problem is if you build an EQ/Compression set on a buss, it’s dumped if you want to try another kit. I’ve found using multiple buss outputs to Protools sounds better than just a stereo instance and it would be helpful to preserve the setup even if it doesn’t load the full drum template.

Bear Face, thanks. Your direction “You can also load complete kits available in the Preset Part submenu items at the bottom of the preset drop-down.” may be the ticket and I need to experiment with this. Cumbersome but potentially will solve trying say a Hansa Kit and wanting a Kramer kick without loading the full Kramer Kit.

Brad, I use an external mixer for summing SD3 as follow: Kick sent to mixer channel 1, Snare sent to mixer channel 2, All other drums fed to Left and Right channels 3&4 on mixer. I then hang a DBX160x off the snare insert, and a couple of parallel comps available for other things.  I have been using aux busses on the L&R but track direct on the Kick and Snare. I will try your setup. It stills doesn’t maintain busses in SD3 for routing out but I can try your methodto be a step closer for changing major kits.

    Thanks all.

I find that every groove has a different routing on my Daw mixer and I don’t like this beahaviour.
