Hi everyone,
About a month ago I upgraded from 2.0 to 3.0, and fortunately 3.0 is way easier to use than 2.0, which I found counter-intuitive and clunky. This has allowed me to create custom kits more smoothly in 3.0. But now with this easier functionality, I am running into some issues that I am hoping you can help me with.
1. Custom midi maps: I am looking to create custom midi maps to use in my DAW (Reaper). I am using the MIDI-in/E-Drums settings dialogue, so I can keep the default midi assignments in 3.0 the same. Ideally, I would like my custom MIDI map to remain the same no matter what kit I am using.
My question is this: what happens to the custom MIDI assignments when different kits have different pieces? Do I have to create custom assignments (and hence new assignment presets) for every custom kit? Or do the custom assignments ‘intelligently reconfigure’ when I bring up a new kit?
2. Adding instruments: I am clear on stacks, extra instruments, and mic routing. But I am not clear about the limits of kit customization. For example, right now I am building a custom kit using the Pearl kit in 3.0. But I really like the cymbal setup for one of the kits in the Metal Machine EZX in 2.0. Ideally, I would like to be able to copy the cymbals from Metal Machine and paste them into the Pearl Kit, and actually see them physically around the kit. But I know this cannot be done, and that instead these cymbals need to be added as Instruments, which appear along the left-side of the screen. (One disadvantage of this is that, if you are adding a lot of custom cymbals, it can be hard to remember where the cymbals are around the kit when they are lined up only along the left side. So it’d be great to see this feature in the future.)
Either way, given this limitation, my question is: what is the best/easiest way to add cymbals from one kit into a different, custom kit while at the same time retaining the mix position of those cymbals in the original kit? So if you wanted to take all the cymbals from Metal Machine EZX and paste them into the Pearl Kit in 3.0 without losing location around the kit, how would you go about it?
I know that I can create custom tracks in the mixer for every new cymbal. So one approach is to pan every custom track, which itself has one of the new cymbals, to where the cymbal is around the kit. But this seems cumbersome. Is there an easier and more intuitive way?
3. Are there any limits to the number of new tracks I can create for X-instruments? This is important because if I wanted to be very particular, I could create a kit that uses a variety of microphone assignments, and then route these mics to custom tracks, and then in the mixer balance everything. Is this possible?
Hey Miscreant,
Drum mappings between libraries are mostly the same, and typically substitution covers the differences in libraries. For instance, if there’s no third rack tom, playing those notes typically triggers the same articulations in the second rack tom. This isn’t flawless of course, but we try. You’ll need to check the MIDI Mapping Keys sidepanel and MIDI Mapping box in the Drums tab, or check the SDX-Keys.pdf document to see differences between libraries. There’s no way of exporting or importing MIDI maps in SD3, however custom maps can be saved in projects and presets. Personally, I have multiple drum maps in my DAW named by SDX.
As to your second question, kit and mic setups will be different between different libraries and that’s just the way it is. It’s the reason why Rooms of Hansa ended up as four libraries, rather than trying to fit all four rooms into a single mixer. You can still play around with the stereo field by routing room mics to X-mics/user mics, but Avatar Studios sounds different than Galaxy Studios and that was taken into consideration when placing the mics. Typically for SDX libraries though, there are enough room mics that at least a few pairs have a close enough stereo image. A few libraries also include close mics for cymbals (depending on the producer).
The total number of User mics available depends on the library and how many instrument mics there are. For instance, in Death SDX the limit is 25 stereo user mics, while SD3 core has 31 available stereo user mics.
