If you have any problems with SD3 in Cubase 10.5 (or maybe other versions) such as freezing, hangs, strange cursor behaviour.. read on.
I have been doing some heavy mixing.. using both EzBass and SD3. I first notice the Cubase 10.5 cursor jumping around.. then not moving at all (tracks still playing), then the SD3 cursor freezing (tracks still playing).. then a total cubase freeze (tracks still playing). The only way to unfreeze cubase was ctr/alt/del which did work every time. So I began my troubleshooting by turning off all automation, then turning off VSTs (except SD3 and EzBass).. but I still got the same behaviour.
It turned out to be – playing the track with the SD3 Grid view on. As soon as I changed the SD3 view (to lets say, the drum kit).. all freezing problems gone. I have no problems with EzBass grid view being open, just SD3. The work around is to just open the SD3 grid view when I NEED to edit, then closing it before the freeze up. Works quite fine that way. This may be an SD3 problem , or it might be Cubase. It is certainly not my i5 CPU with 24gb of ram as the cubase cpu meter is quite low (I off load all of my other plugins to my Wave’s SoundGrid server.
I personally find Cubase 10.5 Pro to be freezing on me alot when I’m working on songs. More than any other versions.
Well, I have no issues at all with Cubase for several years. I have only had 1 crash “EzBass has caused a crash in Cubase” and the above SD3 issue which does not cause a crash.. it just freezes everything on the screen while the song keeps playing. As I said, ctr/alt/del (not task manager) unfreezes everything. And again, this only happens during playback when the SD3 grid editor is open
I have a similar problem. When the Superior Drummer grid editor is open, the track is playing, and I try and move the play cursor in Cubase, it freezes with the track still playing. Minimizing the application unfreezes it.
I’m experiencing the very same issue. Don’t have to minimise, simply moving the focus to another window is enough. It does get in the way of a proper workflow though.
I have the same issue with Cubase 10.5 PRO and Superial Drummer 3.
Any body heard anything fron Toontrack?? Any reply? any solution?
It really comes in the way of workflow.
SOLVED .. I THINK
I updated from version 3.1.5 to 3.2.4
so far so good
WELL .. its still doing it, but less
Must stop playback SD3 grid window 1st, I have cubase stop button right below it (2 quick clicks)
time cursor on grid stays near where “stopped”, so editing is not too bad… just no real time edits. working around this
I was having the same issue, my projects are not very big. 2-3 minute songs, minimal tracks. live bass, gtrs, SD3.
Cubase 10.5 SD3
everything works fine, until grid editor is open. I cannot click anything on host screen or it will freeze (and tracks keep playing).
You would think “follow host” would work fine with host playback controls. It seems to work ok within the 1st 20 seconds or so. But after that it hangs up
If I stop the track with Cubase “stop” button, it will freeze (and tracks keep playing) .. I keep task manager open in the taskbar. open/close task manager it goes back to normal
BUT, to keep it from freezing again. I must stop SD3 playback 1st, then stop the host playback. workflow is slowed doing all of this, having to go find the part to edit
thanks for reading, any input would be great
Does the same on Cubase 11. It is driving me mad. I have to click on another window, and it makes editing infuriating as I need to play the song with grid editor so I can edit some drum parts, and it constantly freezes.
Not only that, but in 11, it changes the grid size in the normal Cubase window to be really zoomed in, so you then have to zoom all the way back out in order to go back to the part of the song you were working on.
A fix to this would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
have any of you guys opened a Ticket with Toontrack Support?

I sent crashdumps to Steinberg. Turns out my Intel CPU was not supported for Win10. I had a new audio computer built – 128gig ram, and the latest motherboard. all problems with SD3 and every other problem now solved. Appears, in my case, to NOT have been a ToonTrack problem, but rather just a case of having my hardware up to speed for the software.

Thanked by: Mellow BoyHi,
I have the same problems with my new Superior Drummer 3 and my Cubase 10.5!
– When I open the fantastic tool, Grid Editor in SD3, the Cubase cursor jumps in steps, and later Freeze but still plays sounds.
– Move Dots in the editor, it only moves two lines and Freeze.
– And on and on…..!
Sadly, I did not find any solution in the previous post!
And sadly, we are a bunch that have the same problem.
The SD3 is up to date!
Cubase is 10.5.30
Windows 10 Pro
8-core i7 9700K
32gb ram
Thanks!

Superior Drummer 3 version: 3.2.4
Operating system: Windows 10
Thank you for the information PipeDreams!
What motherboard, CPU …………… is it in your new build?
It might solve some issues for others to know.
I am not in a position to buy a new computer, but if we can share information about our PC builds it might can sort out what pieces that can cause this behavior with Cubase and Superior Drummer.
Asus Prime z-390
Asus ThunderboltEX3 PCIe Thunderbolt card
Intel i7 9700K
Apollo 16 MKII
Windows 10 Pro
Cubase 10.5.30
Superior Drummer3
Thanks!

I am sorry, but I don;’t know what motherboard they used.. except that it is the “newest” intel..
The CPU is:
<ul class=”wc-item-meta”>
As said, 128gb of Ram.. it was built by PC Audio Labs. Blazing fast and problem free. The Cubase Cubase CPU meter doesn’t even move..
Same problem here. I managed to sort it with Cubase 11 but after updating to cubase 11.0.2 it has returned. Everything is updated. Windows 10 etc. I think it has something to do with the video card driver ?
