…OMG! awesome!!!
My new fav, this and D&D an im so happy. The Amber kit is superb! You need a bit of memory if you intend to turn on all bleed and Ambient mic etc.
One kit loaded in at 20GB lol sounded stunning though and that was me just being a bit silly to test it.
Done a few really rough quick tests here:

Now, the drumming is rubbish as its just a test and I never played these songs before. I just wanted to see how well the kit fitted into the song, and considering I didn’t do anything other than load the preset, it sounds quite good to me
Does it really dovetail with D&D well? I imagined that but if you have both do you get the best of both worlds?
Not managed to download LOR yet – have to share the home WI-FI with the kids and my wife who is still working from home but how to try it out tonight.
Done a few quick tests of my own now – Blues, Rock, Metal, Prog – the Amber kit can do it all. It’s the sound of my youth and being a guitar player and not a drummer I never knew what my own music was missing until now. Thank you TT and Eddie Kramer for making this available to us all.

Superior Drummer 3 version: 3.1.7
Operating system: macOS Catalina (10.15)
D&D is a bit more cleaner, punchy, snappier and modern sounding
LoR is more dirty and gritty and just sounds like the kits did back then. The relevant kits fit perfect into Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix etc etc and Im sure they will fit in well with many others through those decades.
Thats not to say you can’t still use LoR in modern productions, as I think it would add something different to a modern day track. Sometimes, drums can be too perfect and clean and sterile.
Watching the “Making of…” video, it looks like the Helios console preamps were used for the Classic Rock saturated sound, which definitely fits in with my stuff, even though I’m using a Helios 69 emulation for guitars and bass. This was the sound that made me want to pick up a guitar 50 years ago.
I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on it. Now comes the download wait. Will have to write a song with it called, “Begging For Forgiveness (When I Should’ve Asked Permission).

Out of interest which Helios Plugin are you using BFC? I guess the UAD one from the name but just checking…
Seriously though, I’ve been just dropping some of the base kits into mixes in Logic tracks and after adjusting levels they just work.
Obviously there aren’t enough toms and cymbals for my Prog Rock Opera in C# Minor but even for more expansive compositions like this having access to the Timpani’s, the Gong – and of course the Cowbell’s (two of them!!!!) will add to any kits you already have.
I have no doubt that they just work. All of the heavy lifting has been done for us. And, unlike their competition, Toontrack and Eddie Kramer did AIR Studios right (I had huge complaints about it to the “competition” for over a decade). This is what I love about these SDXs. I am installing it right now.
you are right and that the kits here are not the “spaceship“ type of kits used in modern prog rock. Yes is a different story. These come from a much different era, and the masters that use them knew how to squeeze every type of sound out of them. I am probably going to find huge use of the hand articulations, as I have often done such things with acoustic guitar recordings (not everything I do uses a standard drum track).
In answer to your other question, yes, I am using the UAD Helios plug-in. It is absolutely fantastic for recording guitar and bass. I was absolutely hooked on the unison technology of the Apollo, as it brings my ribbon mics to life. My double ribbon mic never sounded so good with it. I never used it with my previous audio interface, because they didn’t seem to go together. Probably an impedance issue. When the unison Helios plug-in was introduced, in the moment I recorded my first guitar track with it, I was immediately like “this is my sound right here“!

I did a few more really rough tests. No mixing, no levelling, just placed the preset on a track in Logic and the music on another. So I can imaging just how good these will be once I spend some time mixing and levelling everything correctly:

Leave a comment if you want, but no abuse please lol 🙂
Jord you’re spot on – these kits are my favourite of any drums I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, let alone record – with the possible exception of Mike Portnoy’s from DT’s “Scenes From a Memory” album and tour.
The only MIDI I have that doesn’t work without modification seems to be the Metal ones which have the China symbol as the power hand – not the biggest problem a producer has ever had.
Possibly the biggest impact this has had on my workflow though, is I’ve spent a few hours today analysing the mixer for some of the my favourite kits and presets in LOR and I’m going to try to see if applying some of this to the SD3 bigger kits gets me in the same ballpark. I know it’s a big ask – different studio and desk, different mics and pre’s, kits and engineers but fun to try.
If I could find a mix which opens up the SD3 5 tom, 10 cymbal kits to this plug and play approach I’ll be asking for Eddie Kramer to get a knighthood in the New Year’s Honour lists.
What’s the crack like on the snares? I tried recreating Bonzo’s sound a while back using different bits from various EZX & SDX addons
I’m tempted to get this but Rooms of Hanza has been my first choice for a while.
Interesting, raw and Ive fallen in love again with retro classic kits:
These kits have character all of their own, far from perfect, but just lovely.
I do now need to spend some time mixing and adjusting levels, but Im amazed how each kit fits into their respective bands and era 🙂

Not to be facetious or condescending here BUT…
You do realize this SDX is from the man behind Zeppelin’s mix. Considering that he used Helios pre’s to capture the drums (which was what Zeppelin was recorded on), I think this is the closest you will ever get to Bonzo without having to conduct a seance. Every time I close my eyes and listen to this SDX, I am almost picturing him playing. If he were here today, I’m sure he’d be proud of how Eddie captured his kits.

I finally stopped messing around with the SDX and plugged it into a couple of songs that I was working on. This might be the first time I have hit a crossroads in one of the songs: both the Legacy of Rock and Rock Foundry kits impart their magic on the song and breathe their own life into it. It just comes down to whether I want that true 70’s Classic Rock feel of LoR or the modern feel of the Rock Foundry. It’s not an easy decision as they both sound amazing to my ears. Something for me to sleep on, I guess.

Nice problem to have though !!
