BenBennett-10Hi guys! I have been using my Roland TD-20 set to run a midi signal (through MIDIMAN interface which has the 2 5-pin MIDI connectors on one end and a USB connector on the other end). I have been able to have my iMAC recognize my drums before and play SD kits into Logic Pro X. So, I just bought a brand-new iMac and everything is working fine except for this one thing. Now, I can plug the USB cable from my Roland RD2000 Stage Piano, and I can play the various keys to get drum sounds from SD3 into Logic Pro – but, if I connect the USB cable coming from my V-Drums – I get nothing. When I go into “Settings->Audio/MIDI Setup” and click on the MIDI Device Tab, it says “No MIDI Input Devices Found”…… My drums are on, the cable is connected and I’ve check all the settings on the V-Drums to send MIDI out – but, obviously something isn’t working. Again, I find it so strange that my RD2000 piano will send signals and I can play the drums with my fingers – but I want to play them with my sticks on my V-Drums. Can anyone out there help me figure out what I’ve done wrong?
Mark KingProbably nothing. The Mac is not recognising the midi interface. Do you have another usb input to try? Are all the inputs usb3? Sometimes older usb1/2 just won’t work in these.
I think you can use the rd2000 as a midi interface for your drums. I had a quick look at the manual so here is how I think you would do it.
Plug the midi out of the td20 to the midi in of the rd2000.
in settings make sure usb midi through is enabled
if you use the rhythm section on the rd2000 you may need to change the output midi channel on the td20 to something other than 10 but if you don’t then probably no need. You can even change the midi out of the rhythm track on the rd2000. Its got loads of settings.
So if you do the above then the td20 should play in your Mac over the usb but on a different midi channel depending on what is set. You have no need for a 2nd midi interface.
i hope this does work. I have a td30 with usb and I use it as a midi interface for my old keyboard exactly the same way except it’s the td30 used as the interface and the keyboard plugged into the midi in of the td30.

BenBennett-10Well, Mark, I was very happy to read your response. That all made perfect sense to me! So, I went to the TD20 and set the MIDI setting to “Soft/Through”. I plugged a midi cable into the MIDI out plug, and ran the other end of the cable to my RD2000 midi in port. Fired up Logic Pro and Superior Drummer. I played a few keys on my piano to ensure I was hearing drums sounds through my computer and I was. So, I went over to my drums and smacked the snare a few times – and NOTHING. So, I still must be doing something wrong. Does it sound like it?
Mark KingIt’s not the td20 you need to set soft thru on. You need to do it on the rd2000
the setting on a td30 is “ON(USB MIDI) it is probably the same on the rd2000.

Mark KingLooking at the rd2000 manual it looks like you have the choice of midi thru on or off. I just hope on means it will output through the USB port as well as the midi port. It would be bad omission if it didn’t on a keyboard of that price

BenBennett-10Hey Mark! Thanks for the clarification. I will see if I can find the manual for the piano and see where in the menu I can set it to MIDI-Thru. Sorry that I misinterpreted what you stated in your previous post. I’ll turn the “thru” off on the TD-20, and turn it on in the RD2000 once I find the process of how to do that and I’ll try it out and let you know what happens! Thanks again!
BenBennett-10Well, I feel like I have tried it all! I set the Roland RD2000 to MIDI_THRU, hooked up the midi cable from MIDI-OUT on the V-Drums into the MIDI Thru connector on the RD2000…. still it does not work to play the drums and get any drum sounds on the computer. I can hit the piano keys and get drum sounds, but that’s not going to work. I’m wondering if my MIDI-Man cable is not meant to connect two devices by midi connector (5-pin) since one is a Midi in and one is a Midi out – and they both run through a little controller board that goes out to the USB type cable. Any additional thoughts?
Mark KingAh right absolutely not. You need a normal midi cable din socket to din socket. So it should be the round end on both ends and should only have two ends. Definitely no usb anywhere. The cable you are trying to use is a midi interface so will not do what you want. The two din (round sockets) are not connected to each other. Sorry I assumed you knew what a midi cable was. A midi cable will cost a couple of pounds or dollars depending where you are. It is literally wired through pin to pin. There is no circuit board or USB port. One end in the out of the td20 and the other end into the midi in of the rd2000. Also I recommend you read up a bit on midi as it may help you understand a bit more.

BenBennett-10Thanks Mark! Yes, I do know what MIDI is, I just hadn’t thought through that cable difference. I checked my bag where I thought I had a regular MIDI cable, but alas, to no avail. If I have to buy a new MIDI cable anyway, maybe I will just look at an updated MIDI-USB interface cable that I can run directly from the TD-20 to my new iMac, just like I did before (with my 2015 iMac). It might cost me a few more dollars, but would be straight-forward instead of running it through my RD2000. Any thoughts on that line of thinking?
Mark KingOnly thing I would say is don’t get the cheapest one as they are notoriously dodgy. It’s a midi interface and not just a cable. The cheap ones are rubbish. A cheap midi cable will however work as it is just connectors and wires with no electronic parts. I would get both as the midi cable may come in useful at some point.

BenBennett-10Good Advice, Mark. What do you think of this model? It’s one of the more expensive that I found – all the others were between $15-$20.
Mark KingM-AUDIO are a decent make so should be ok. What I can’t comment on is what will be good with a Mac as I’ve never had one.

BenBennett-10Hey there! I talked with one of the specialists over at Sweetwater Music. He steered me away from the M-Audio and pointed me to a Roland one that has updated drivers for the latest release of the Mac OS (10.15). He said Roland does a much better job of keeping up driver support for their products. So I ordered that and it should be here next Wednesday. Now I just wait. I’ll let you know if it works! demiurgemikeI’m not sure this is helpful or the same issue as this thread is describing but I was having a similar problem and did find a very easy solution. To jump to the solution that worked for me, at the top left of the screen to the right of the Apple logo you will see Logic Pro. Choose Logic Pro > Settings > Audio (or use the Open Audio Settings key command), then click the Devices button. On this page you should see the options for input and output, choose “system settings” for both. So for more detail what was happening with me is after I setup my TD-17 for use with Superior Drummer 3 I was getting signal but no sound. I also had the message saying “waiting for MIDI” in the settings page in SD3. I’m certain this will probably not work but hopefully it might. It’s funny because I had a similar issue when trying to save SD3 to my external SSD and it ended up being a similar solution of me just not looking at the top left corner of the Mac screen and clicking on the options there.
