I broke off a kit from the base SD3 into channels in Logic. The strange thing is the direct snare mic (top) is barely present and the bottom mic hardly registers all. It’s so not present it’s almost not worth having on it’s own channel(s).
Most snare sound comes from overheads. Why?
Why mic the snare directly if you can’t get the sound?
now I’ll have to create additional busses from the overheads while isolating the snare bleed (if I can) just to add FXs in Daw.
is this an issue with JUST the SD3 base kit? I changed out snares and it still seems the same.
The only thing I can think of is the mic routing. With the snare selected in the Drums tab, if you click More then select Route Instrument Microphones, are the “close” SD Top and SD Bottom routed to SD top mic and SD bottom mic? I had the same exact issue with some cymbals and noticed that they weren’t routed correctly.
It should look like this:

Thanked by: ChadwickDunderc0ckThanks. I did check that. Even if I turn the SD3 meter full it maybe gets to -12db and it’s very faint.
Note: whats also weird is if I STACK a snare the x busses that route the STACKED SNARE are loud And normal as I would expect the main snare to be
The raw unprocessed kits core library are recorded with all of their headroom intact to ensure transients aren’t distorted. Thus, they are not going to be that loud. To get a more “rock” type of kit, you would apply compression (and eq where necessary) and raise the make-up gain. Also remember that a kit is defined by it ambient channels as well as the close mic’d channels.

Thanked by: ChadwickDunderc0ckYes. I get that. I’m just surprised they aren’t mixed close and just pulled back to give more options if needed.
I’ve been digging in creating a lot of custom kits attempting to recreate some stems I have. Great way to learn.
The snare I’m after now is HALLOW from Alice In Chains. Its hard to isolate like that without the snare mics pumped. The OHs are softened and smooth while the snare punches through.
There’s only so much you can do.
Hi digitalpimple,
what are the Snare’s Close microphones levels in the SD3 mixer? Even if you route to channels in Logic’s mixer, the fader in the SD3 mixer will affect how much is sent to Logic. Also, each instrument have a level fader on the DRUMS page. Note that changing this level affects all microphones.

Thanked by: ChadwickDunderc0ckAs John said, start by making sure that your faders in SD3 are at unity and control the output with Logic.
That aside, if you believe you are limited, then you are looking at it the wrong way. I just listened to the song and that snare is very doable with some EQ (remember what told you about removing bad mids… they can suck out the punch from a snare) and some parallel compression (that helps to bring out the punch). Sometimes tucking a bit of distortion underneath will help to bring out the ring. It also goes without saying that you need to start off with the right sounding snare.
There’s also no shame in using any of the SDX’s that you own. That’s what they are there for. Leaning on the likes of Bob Rock, Randy Staub, Andy Sneap, Forrester Savill, etc., for their expertise in having gotten a recorded rock sound at the source is a significant step closer to getting the kit sound you want. I get the idea of wanting to mould a generic recorded snare, as I often practice making various drum mixes and have had fun doing stuff like that for the last 20 years. However, I have also learned along the way the importance of getting it right at the source.

Thanked by: ChadwickDunderc0ckTry routing snare direct out. Bypass the SD3 internal bus. I get a great signal into Protools here. Make sure your input into your Daw is turned up. I usually get to red with mine. Try different snares.

Thanked by: ChadwickDunderc0ckEverything is cranked in all aspects. I’ve been digging through every setting in the software
What I did find is that the live room SD3 Henz works fine and levels and feeds are perfect. It seems to be the base SD3 kit that has this “issue” for me. IDK.
So I started over with that and have pretty well isolated each drum now including the snare. 🤘🏻
It has more to do with how they’re processed than the settings themselves.
