I just upgraded my Macbook Pro to a 16″ with a 2.6 ghz 6 core processor with 64 GB of RAM, mostly because my older (2015) 13″ machine couldn’t handle SD3 with all of the bleeds turned on. Now I’m running smoothly (a simple session takes almost 30GB of RAM btw…..) but I am wondering this….
On my old machine I only had a 5oo GB SSD internal drive. So…. I was running SD3 and Studio One song storage off of a 1 TB external SSD.
I have plenty of space on my new internal SSD (I got a 1TB drive this time).
To my knowledge SD3 will take a little longer to load into RAM if kept on an external SSD but once it does the speed should be the same whether I’m running it off of my internal or external drive. Connection is via USB C.
So….. Is there an advantage to either or other storage option than the load time? One thing that happens when I am in full session is that the Macbook starts running pretty hot from using 30+ GB of RAM constantly. I have Mac Fan installed to combat that… but…. would it run cooler or use the processors in any different way to run SD3 internal rather than external? Or any other advantage / disadvantage? I know this has been covered elsewhere but I haven’t really seen much more of an answer than what I stated above (once loaded into RAM should run the same). Everything works fine…. just want to make sure I am running the machine as optimally as possible.
Speaking of running optimally…. I am currently dedicating 2 cores to SD 3. No performance issues. Any reason to dedicate more? It doesnt’ seem to change CPU usage or anything else is analysis. I’m also running a lot of Izotope software so processing power is at full throttle.
Thank you in advance for your input!
