Hey guys,
I love the Matt Halpern Drum Tone/Sound, especially from the last two Periphery Albums III & IV.
Now, I put myself on a mission trying to get as close as possible to his tone, using SD3. Hold on, I know there is GGD Kontakt Librarys more or less offering exactly that but truth being told, I would like to stay in SD3. I do understand the source Sound of the captured Drums makes a big chunck of the final Sound, no matter the Processing being done to it afterwards but I am sure within the SD3 extensions there is Drums being rather close. I just love SD3 with its neat features, great UI and endless possibilities so much that GGD is not an option as of now – also I have spent quite some money on SD3 Products.
I don´t wanna tweak the sound too much within SD3 but I rather want to find a drumkit (probably a hybrid one) that is providing the best source tone going into Matts direction of tone, then route it out into Studio One and apply the most treatment to it there. I´d be ok, EQing some of the instruments slightly in SD3, before routing it out into the DAW but things like compression, Reverb, etc. I would like to do outside.
Now, why do I post this here? I am hoping, someone in here eventually has done something similar or was after an equal result. If anyone has any recommendations on which drums from which extension pack to look into, I´d really appreciate. Currently in addition to the core library I also own the Rock Foundry, Metal Machinery, Death&Darkness, The Progressive Foundry. I have previously heard from a friend that the progressive foundry is most likely the one offering the best source tones to get close to that. I think Nolly, the producer of Periphery also is a fan of Forrester Savell who recorded the progressive foundry so chances are good, they do something similar here.
Any input is welcome. And on a side note: This will be my first ever kit that I put together myself. So far only been working with the Presets. It is also the first time routing out into my DAW, so bare with me in case I don´t know much here 🙂
Have a great day all
Hi 6stringchug,
My first thought after I read this was are you able to get his source drums sounds off the internet individually? ie. Kik, snare, hat ECT… Or find someone with ggd and ask them to send you his individual instruments via Wav or whatever….
Then you can just drag those sounds in & build your own kit of his drums using the user drums pads… 🙂
Hm, haven´t thought about that – didn´t even know this being possible. Then I´d need to have the source tone Waves with all velocities, no? Don´t know how that would work, as I am not a champion with this kind of technicallity
Well, if you do get this figured out, I would be ecstatic to get a hold of the preset once done because I love to have this sound as well! 😉

No unfortunately you wouldn’t get all the velocities….But check it out if you have the time and see how it sounds to you…
I have the original Matt Halpern Slate Trigger pack if that helps? Whilst they would be one shot samples, I could sort the kicks, snares and toms for you?

Before moving forward with extracting GGD samples you may want review their EUA. In the FAQ it states: “There are no other fees to pay, provided you use our sounds in the context of a musical composition and not as part of a library of sounds.”
