My set up is similar to yours as I have a Roland TD-17 connected to my Mac mini via USB and I connect from my Mac mini to my digital mixer via USB. I have a pre-Sonus 16.0.2 which gives me multi track.

Yes you will need a DAW, I use logic pro and studio one. You could also use garage band

The multi channel set up you’re referencing allows you to receive multiple channels within your DAW, depending on which drum set within EZ drummer you have selected, to mix the midi for each microphone for that kit (kick, snare, overhead, etc.).

This was one of the hardest concepts for me to get when I was starting out, so I hope this helps you.

Thank you for the prompt reply Barticus, that is very helpful.

However I’m still a bit confused. If my goal is to have a band practice session rather than record one, can’t I just send the individual channels directly from Toontrack Solo to XR18 and control the main and monitor mixes from the XR18 app? From your reply I guess the answer is no. So my question (which should have been more specific from the beginning and I apologize about this) is, how do I make this work? What cables do I need and what should be the signal flow? i.e TD17 to MacBook (Toontrack Solo and EZD2) via USB —–> MacBook to XR18 via USB.

I know I’m missing the DAW part in the above flow but I guess this is my question. Where does it come in?

    Thanks again

    Hi,

    2 things first:

    1. if you are on EZdrummer 2.0.2, you really need to update to the latest version, currently 2.1.8.
    2. Why are you using Toontrack solo? EZdrummer 2 has got its own standalone application. Toontrack solo was made for EZdrummer 1 and Superior 2 E-drummer users.

I have never used an XR18 but isn’t the whole idea behind it that it’s both a hardware mixer and an Audio Interface?

I would go USB out from the TD17 for the MIDI connection and then use the XR18 as Audio Interface, also connected via USB.

In the EZdrummer 2 app, set up the TD17 for MIDI In and the XR18 for Audio out. When the XR18 is selected as the Audio device, you can also choose to use EZdrummer with Multiple outputs and route the plugin’s 16 outputs to your XR18’s outputs.

    John

Thank you for the quick reply John. I’m going to try this setup and come back with my comments.

I will update EZD2 to 2.1.8 as well

    John,

I’m confused when you mentioned (I would go USB out from the TD17 for the MIDI connection and then use the XR18 as Audio Interface, also connected via USB.) I have a TD-6V and MIDI out into a XR18 but have not figured out how to separate the channels as of yet I only get stereo through channel 1. You suggested USB out for MIDI and USB From XR18. So USB would champion over MIDI out of the module? Also is there any confirmation that EZ Drummer 2 works with the X AIR mixing software?

Thanks for your time, this has been driving me crazy!

You don’t need a DAW for routing all of EZD2’s channels if you have an audio interface that has many outputs. The xr18 seems to be good for this. Though a DAW can provide more options and processing.

Xair controls behringer products, not toontrack products. “After” sending the audio from EZD2 to xr18, you can mix that audio via xair with your xr18. You need a midi controller if you want to mix via EZD2. I assume not what you’re  looking for.

    Signal Flow:

Go USB from Roland to your computer. This is what triggers EZD2 sounds.

USB from computer to xr18 is how the sounds get from easy drummer to the xr18.

in EZD2 audio/settings (paraphrasing not at computer right now, on phone typing). MIDI input, set it to your Roland. Audio output, select xr18. If xr18 does what it seems to do, you will see multiple outputs. Give each output its own channel. Now go to the Mixer Tab in EZD2 and change the output assignments under each volume fader. Rehashing John’s reply.

Unless I can’t predict how the xr18 works, you’re done. You did not mention how you intend to route this audio as an end game. But now you xr18 has all the toontrack channels. No need for Solo.

    hope that helps.

    Hey thanks a lot Shootiehg,

I now have my TD-6V going MIDI out into my Scarlet MIDI in and going USB to my mac and my X Air mixer connected to my Mac USB. The E drums in EZD2 are set to Roland, Audio device is set to XR18, MIDI device set to the Scarlet and I’m now successfully able to trigger my acoustic drums. BUT now, how can I rout the EZ Drummer 2 app from 2 stereo channels to 16 multichannel’s out to My X Air? All of the EZD2 channels are set to multichannel but all I’m getting is just channel 1 and 2 in the X Air are working as 2 channel stereo out. I need help getting multichannel out of EZD2  to my X Air mixer.

    Thanks again for your time.

What are your options for “Out Channels” in EZD2 Audio settings. It’s the only thing you did not screen shot.

Hey thanks a lot Shootiehg for getting back so quick!
I have attached the screenshots you ask for. i think I just realized the maybe 1 and 2 out should be channel 17 and 18? and the rest should rout? I might be wrong but what do you think?

    Thanks again for your time.

I don’t have good news for you. I thought in EZD2 there was a Multi-Out box that could be selected in Audio Setting after engaging Multi-out on the Mixer Tab. Either that use to be there and it went away in an update, or I just confused SD3 for EZD2. See attached from SD3.

I will start a new thread asking this specific question. Subscribe to it. May get a quick answer on a fresh thread.

I would have to say at this point, hoping to send multi channel via USB to an interface might be tough without a DAW or SD3. We’ll find out.

Ok, I’m going to one up you on this, I used a DAW, Reaper along with my X Air XR18. I got everything to work perfectly and was having EZDrummer 2 as an VSTi FX playing the canned Midi tracks within the Reaper DAW and also mixing all 16 channels on the X Air.
But the E drums feature in EZD2 to would not work too physically trigger my acoustic drums. In standalone yes but not as a VSTi within Reaper. When I quit the XR18 and went to my TD-6V MIDI out to my Scarlett 4i4 MIDI in the EZD2 E Drums feature in the stand-alone app trigger my acoustic drums perfectly through the Focusrite control as a mixer, WTF???

Man, if EZ Drummer 2 does not have that capability and SD3 does I wasted tons of time and money. I’m now looking into SD3, maybe that’s what the Toontrack agenda is to make you buy the better product with more capability, had I known. Nobody from Toon track has chimed in it would be nice if someone did.

All I want to do is use the XR18 to mix separate mixes for in ear capability through the ULTRANET connection, play my real drums to trigger Easy Drummer 2, that’s what I bought these products. I don’t want to use a DAW just a simple setup for a live setting. I live in Las Vegas and know how important it is to have a band sound amazing at low controlled volume (Remo Silent Stroke heads and Sabian Quiet tone cymbals, Roland RT triggers) that’s in my view professional. Why is this so impossible to figure this out, I don’t really know, Toontrack can you help???

Thanks again Shootiehg you have been the voice of this tread.

It’s hard to blame Toontrack to have their flagship program do it all and the others not. We’re not done yet though…

The routing feature I was talking about did use to be there, Toontrack is pretty good about fixing their updates when there are mishaps. I’m going to report the multi-out issue. We’ll see if they say they will put the fix in the que. Also a great contributor to this forum, Brad Holland said he reverted back to EZD2 2.0.2 to get the multi-out feature back. You could contact support directly and request the 2.0.2 version and see if that gets you by in the meantime. Hopefully 2.0.2 doesn’t have too many bugs. To contact support directly, go to any EZD2 FAQ, scroll to the bottom and select Contact Support under Tags.

    https://www.toontrack.com/forums/topic/a-feature-lost-in-an-ezd2-update-please-consider-fixing-multi-out/

So that part of the case is closed for now to the best to our ability.

In the meantime if you don’t buy SD3, which I would recommend for studio/live drummers where this is their main regular setup, tell me this about Reaper… BTW, I think you get $100 off cross-grading from EZD2 to SD3 and your EZXs are still compatible.

Are you sure Reaper recognizes the TD16? If you’re not sure, open up any other virtual instrument and try to trigger it.
I’m not a Reaper pro, but make sure your Reaper channel is record enabled.

I’ve had some issues in the past where EZD2 standalone will not recognize a particular midi device, but my DAW usually does. It’s interesting to see the opposite here.

I get it with the bare bones live setup. It’s usually difficult to get 5 different manufactures to be on the same page all of the time for your particular needs. It will happen somehow though. Just need to keep on the issues.
