Hi all
I’m designing an SD3 kit to use with e-drums to record out dry. I want extra control over cymbal volume levels, so I’ve routed mics to create channels for all cymbals, especially with a view to controlling the ride vols (someone else usually does our mixing, and they’ve moaned previously about the ride tracking).
I’ve noticed that in my designer kit, in the ambient ribbon channel all instruments including the cyms are in the bleed properties list, but in oh dyn the cymbals (i.e. all the things I rerouted) are missing. Being a noob, I’m wondering if I have created a problem for myself here, when it comes to rendering the overhead stereo pairs out, or whether the cyms aren’t supposed to be in that mic anyway. In the black metal preset, for example, I notice that oh dyn lists the cymbals, not in bleed, but in close mic audio from instruments, which is just underneath the bleed box in properties for that channel. My kit’s oh dyn channel doesn’t have that at the moment.
Anyone know?
Hi,
I guess it would be easier to answer specifics about your Project if you zip it and attach to a post here but in general: OH mics are considered ‘Close’ Mics for Cymbals and everything else Bleeds, in AMB mics, everything is considered Bleed.
If you create a new Mixer Chanel for the Ride, this will be its Close mic. It will still bleed into the other microphones (unless you have changed that as well) but not be a part of the original OH channel.

Thanked by: roland ratHi John
Thus far, I’ve sent my cymbals to the OH Cond per Mike Luke’s advice in videos, including the ride (and two x-cyms I’ve added to my rather large kit), and created a channel for the ride only (because in previous recordings done with acoustic kits, I had trouble isolating the ride in order to bring its level up in some pretty dense and busy music, and I wanted to avoid that in S3).
That’s handy advice re close and bleed: however, since traditional OH tracks (in an acoustic recording) are stereo and contain the whole kit, what would S3’s overheads spectrum consist of? A mix of all the OH & AMB channels?
Sorry, but as a noob just trying to get a handle on this pretty complex but brilliant new toy.

Setting levels of individual instruments is easy by using the Level property box in the Drums tab 🙂
