I’ve just installed SD3 and all works well until I add Roland TD 50 via midi USB. When I hit a drum in the software with a mouse I get full sound at appropriate volume, when I hit a pad on the TD 50 i get a much quieter sound. It’s so quiet that even with headphones on I can hear the sound of the sticks on the pads over the sound of the SD3 output through the headphones! Please help!!
Hi sroebuck3,
There are a few points where you could boost your volume. Selecting a library preset can boost your levels, but the default preset should not be as quiet as you describe – especially if it sounds alright when you use your mouse. The preset button is in the upper right of the main window, next to the library name.
You could start by opening the MIDI In/E-Drums
settings page, and either select your drum module with the Select a MIDI Device...
button, or activate the Use Preset
button and select your module from there.
Make a few hits on your kit. If you look at the analyzer in the bottom left, are the velocities alright, and is the sound more level? The Analyzer display the MIDI information that is sent from your drumkit. The maximum value for MIDI velocities is 127 and should represent your hardest hit.

Thanked by: sroebuck3Thanks for the reply Erik. The velocities do match on TD50 and SD3. But even giving the snare (for example) a fair whack to give the 127 max hit… the resultant noise through the headphones is still considerably less than the 127 mouse initiated hit, and the kick is barely audible at all? I’ve tried both ‘select midi device’ and ‘use preset’.
Thanks
Steve

It shouldn’t be any different from clicking in the interface vs. hittin the e-drum on the same articulation, with the same velocity.
You can see more detailed info about the MIDI that goes into SD3 on the MIDI In Settings page, in the Analyzer area.

Thanked by: sroebuck3 and ErikAlso the usb output can be a bit low to the td50. Make sure you have it loud enough. Also SD3 has an overall volume slider you can use. It’s quite common the output seems quieter when playing. It isn’t it just seems that way as you expect it to be louder once hitting pads. Make sure you have optimum triggering and turn it up.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

Thanked by: sroebuck3Here we go again… if you’d only increase the gain in the USB Audio setting on the module…. it has nothing to do with velocities.
Thanks for all you comments on this. I have now sorted the issue with volume and routing the sounds back through TD 50 using Midi USB…. The problem was I’d plugged in to a USB 3 port which isn’t supported by TD 50 drivers, simple fix once I’d figured out my mistake.

Do you mean it has to be plugged into USB 2 port in order to get decent velocity volumes from the kit’s module?
Yes, at least not a USB3 port. There were volume and latency issues that were improved once connected through USB2. However, even now I’m still not 100% satisfied with latency and stability and it’s a faff each and every time I switch it on cycling through the Audio/Midi/ASIO options. TBH I tend to use the Roland module sounds more often than not now as it’s less hassle. Shame really….
