I’m trying to use SD3 as a plugin to MainStage3 for live performance.
We built 6 kits in SD3, then created 6 patches in MS3, one for each kit. However, when we change patches in MS3 it takes several *minutes* before all the drum sounds are available – which is entirely impractical for a live performance.
I’m using a MacMini, quad-core i7 with 16GB RAM. I’ve configured SD3 to use only 1 CPU, and I’ve disabled the ‘cache’ option in SD3 so all sounds should be preloaded (not wait for the trigger). All kits are between 1000-1000MB in size.
I’m using MS3 as the DAW just so we can change patches via MIDI. No other instruments are configured in MS3. Changing between these kits (manually) in SD3 only takes about 20 seconds. MainStage loads all plugins into RAM at startup, so total RAM required by these kits should not be close to the max of 16GB.
I expected MS3 to have loaded all the kits at startup so switching between kits should be very fast. But that’s not happening. I suspect it may be MS3 that’s crapping out on me, so if someone has had success with some other simple DAW I would be willing to switch.
BTW, the audio interface is not the problem – It happens when tested with 3 different makes/models, as well as as straight out the headphone jack.
Hi there!
I tried this setup two years ago. But MS is pain in the …. for this. I had the same mac mini with two ssd running and even a RME Fireface, a real fat setup. But MS always made problems. You should take a look at LiveProfessor. They have a 30 day tryout with full functionality. MS works great with it’s onboard instruments for keyboards and so on, but not for thirt part VST’s.
I took my first steps with a state of the art Windows8 Laptop with bloxpander. The software was top notch for this project, but windows8 Was a crap!
Maybe this info helps you out . . . .
cheers and greetings from Cologne
I think a fast external SSD and some RAM will significantly speed up yout sound patch loading.
An SSD will speed it up but even with a spinning disk it shouldn’t take minutes. As stated in the first post manual changing kits is fast. This definitely sounds like it’s down to MS3. Not something I have tried.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
Hi,
as Mark King points out, the changing of kits should not be counted in minutes but rather seconds with your computer.
I haven’t clocked my MBP (which is an i7 Quad-core 16GB RAM) but I have hard believing it takes more than 30 seconds to load a fairly large kit in the standalone SD3 app.
Have you compared loading the same kit(s) in the standalone vs MainStage?

John
