Greetings All,
FWIW – I loved the ease of SD2 when bouncing MIDI to audio.
SD3 is a bit of a learning curve…
Having read through several forum threads here on the Bounce to Audio topic, I have done the following:
Keep in mind – there is NO processing, other than summing, going on in SD3. None. Zip. Notta.
The 2-bus from SD3 sounded fantastic in my DAW, the bounce should sound equally fantastic, since there is NO processing but summing in SD3.
What I had coming out of the SD3 2-bus (Outputs 1&2) sounded amazing. And it is Dry.
Now all I want are those amazing dry tracks broke out in my DAW, sounding JUST as amazing – so I can process them there with the rest of the mix.
(As if I had recorded real drums!)
So –
>I have recorded the DAW MIDI drums track into SD3 and verified the MIDI in SD3 Tab/Track 1 via the SD3 Outputs 1&2 still feeding the DAW.
(for that verification, I muted the MIDI event/data in the DAW, and let SD3 play via “Follow Host”.) So far, so good.
> All instruments in SD3 (Kick, Snare, HiHat, etc) were then assigned to their respective Outputs via the mixer in SD3.
(“X” snare tracks were bussed to the same “Snare Output” as the regular “Metal Machinery” snares – Outputs 5&6; kicks to Outputs 3&4, etc.)
>When I go to bounce to audio, under the Advanced tab, I select “Bounce Output Channels” and “Split Stereo Microphones”.
>I select the folder to save the audio files to, then SD3 states “bouncing Track 1, Bouncing mixer at 0.0” and looks like it is bouncing, complete with
track level LED’s flashing in the background.
But – when done, SD3 displays “Could not create all files.”
A quick look in the selected audio/bounce folder selected earlier, shows there are NO files. None. Not one.
SD3 gives no indication of what went wrong, only that it “Could not create all files.”
More questions –
>Some channels on the SD3 mixer have no levels – 4 cymbal levels stay blank, but OH is flashing, so depending on the kit, some mics are not there –
I get that – so cymbals should be there in the OH (Outputs 15&16) and Ambient (Outputs 17 & 18), yes?
>I take it there is no way to get the individual cymbals post fader, no processing??
(“Metal Machinery” shows 4 cymbal tracks, but they are only in OH track…I can get them if I go pre fader???? )
> After re-assigning the tracks to their respective outputs, there are no SD3 outputs assigned to the DAW, other than 1&2, which no longer has any active
tracks assigned to it.
(The Bounce function does not play in real time, and is bouncing out the audio to the selected folder, so no DAW assignment required, yes?)
So – what am I doing wrong?
…and how do we go back to the ease of SD2 for bouncing to audio. It worked, was easy, and sounded great… 😉
Thank you for any help, light, and your time,
MG

But – when done, SD3 displays “Could not create all files.”

Thank you for the response Henrik.
The kicker here is that I had a perfect bounce with the pre-fader selection, but unfortunately, that did not sound anything like what I was hearing from SD3 in the DAW project.
Again – no processing – no compressors, no EQ, no effects… so SD3’s mix must have something going on with the summing, and I was hoping to get that sound with a bounce to stems.
So in an attempt to get the bounced tracks to sound more like what I was hearing from the SD3 2-bus, I tried going the separate outputs method.
Since there is plenty of room on the drive, and the previous mic channel/pre-fader bounce was successful, it leads me to wonder what the issue is with SD3’s outputs. The outputs are not assigned to the DAW, but because of the fast/silent bounce…they do not need to be, correct?
Yes – the latest version of SD3 is in use – that is the first thing I verified.
It’s odd that I easily got a great stem sound with SD2 and comments on the forums here state that SD3’s process is essentially the same…
I will try another folder, and worst case just use the pre-fader mic files, since that bounce was sucessfull.
Thanks again,
MG
If you select Bounce Output Channels it should do exactly that, take the audio from the output channels and render audio files from that. Can you save your SD3 project and post it here so we can have a look at it, why it doesn’t do what you want.

Hmmm… that’s exactly what I thought.
Thank you Henrik.
I hope to save that session and open it in the stand-alone SD3, and see what happens.
Unfortunately, the client does not want his tracks posted on a public forum.
I have clients here this evening, but hope to try a few things tomorrow evening.
I will report my findings.
Thanks for your help and time Henrik.

Thanked by: Henrik EkblomOK – Someone at Toontrack HAS to know what this error window signifies:
It is not a Microsoft pop-up error window, it is a TOONTRACK error window, so a programmer at Toontrack put it there for a reason… WHAT IS IT???
I only see it when attempting to bounce OUTPUT CHANNELS to audio from SD3.
When I bounced Microphone Channels, I ended up with 28 files – all good. But not sounding anything like what I heard on the SD3 2-bus in the DAW.
So, I decided to try my hand at bouncing output channels, and SD3 goes through all the motions, but ends up with the error window above.
To report further experiments:
Someone at Toontrack has to know what that error window signifies, or at least has an educated guess of where to look!!
Thanks for any and all help,
MG

Hi,
I am pretty certain Support will want to have your SD3 Project to be able to move further quickly. Just the SD3 (*.sd3p) file, not any other tracks.

That error message means just what it says. It is not usually mysterious at all. The typical reasons are that you don’t have write access to that folder or that the device is full. That would seem to not be the case for you, since you succeed i bouncing the mics.
When bouncing outputs there is a first stage when the mics are bounced as intermediate files. These files are removed once the bounce is finished. You may want to view the folder with the file browser during the bounce to see if those intermediate files are created at all.
And, as John wrote, sending in the .sd3p-file would give us a chance to see if we can replicate the problem and solve it.

John and Olle –
Thank you both for your recent replies.
I have no trouble sending the file directly to Toontrack. I just need someone to email me a link.
As mentioned, the client is not good with posting it on a public forum.
Olle –
You may be on to something –
During the bounce, it states first that Track1 is being bounced, then that each mic is being bounced out – but –
with MS Windows Explorer opened, I could watch the files being created, then SD3 CRASHED.
[see attached screen shot.]
Since SD3 crashed, the interim files are still there – but are those the ones I want? – Or are those the mic channels I already have?
Also – I ran the Microphone Channels Bounce again – and once again – it was successful.
This project is using Metal Machinery, and only one Kick Drum – the Right one.
Is it possible there are issues with this library, since it was created for SD2?
The client is very happy with the sound so far, and as mentioned – there is NO processing in SD3, other than summing, so
we really want to get this working.
Thanks again to you all for your help and time,
MG

I just tried uploading files, but received an error window from support stating dmp files are not allowed…
I’m assuming sd3p files are also not allowed?
One would think that Tech Support could use those dump and project files.
So – I will need someone from Toontrack to email me an upload link.
Thanks,

So any Solution with this error message ? cause i have the same problem.
i have routet my channel in to busses and than into mulit out (as you can see in attached pic) Now i want to bounce only my output. than error “Creating all files” pop up. if i do bouncing for mic channel work well. i have the right for all folder to create files, so i dont know what i can do
Solved:
Here is the answer from Tonntrack Suppor:
The programmer found the issue. This error is caused by having mixer output channels that are re-named to contain a slash. In this instance you should rename the output channels so that they don’t contain the slash character. For example, change “Out 1/2_Kick” to “Out 1+2_Kick”.
The programmers confirmed there will be a fix for this, so SD3 can use slashes, in the next SD3 update. We do not have an ETA for this update, but you will be notified in the Product Manager as soon as it is available.

Thanked by: Henrik EkblomThat didn’t work for me. Renamed all outputs and still have the issue. Thank you though!
@Sean: Could you please zip archive your Project file and attach it to a post here?

having the same issue.. very frustrating!
Ed,
As much as I hate saying this, as I’m sure you have – be sure you’re running the latest version.
Toontrack fixed the “/+” filename issue in the latest update.
Other than trying to rename your files, you may need to contact Toontrack support…
Good luck!
