Hi,
I’d like to know how to use/if it’s possible to use Superior Drummer 3 in Studio One 4 using the Windows Audio driver, but without a digital interface. Can anyone tell me if that is possible and how I would have to configure the systems? Or do I absolutely need to have a digital interface?
I’ll be traveling for a month and want to work on preparing drum parts for a project, but was hoping that I didn’t need to bring a DI with me, or a keyboard controller.
Thank you!
George
Yes it’s possible. You can enter notes manually in studio one. And SD3 behaves like any other vsti. I take it you will be entering notes manually ore using the presets as you say you are not taking a controller? If you do use a controller you could struggle with latency but you can try ASIO4ALL. Which may fix this.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
Hello Mr. King.
Thank you for your answer. I thought that I could enter notes manually, which is what I had planned on doing. However, I can not hear the notes I’m playing when using SD3 in S1. I’ve searched the internet for how to configure S1, and still no sound. Do have I have to set up SD3 as multiple outputs to be able to hear the sound first?
Thank you.
George
Do you have track record enabled or at least the monitor option selected when you are “previewing“ or entering MIDI “notes”?

Hello Brad,
Yes, I did have the track armed and the monitor on. When recording (hitting the drums in SD3) while recording, no midi is being recorded and I don’t hear anything. I’m sure that it’s something very simple that I’m not doing.

Hey George,
Ok, so a couple questions.
Do you hear anything when previewing? Just clicking on a drum kit, not with the record transport running.
Are you trying “record” within SD3 (on an SD3) track or on the S1 instrument track?
When you just drag a groove to the SD3 track and hit “play” in S1 do you here anything? (With Follow Host selected)

No, I didn’t hear anything while clicking on the drum kit. I was trying to record in S1 on an instrument track. I’ll have to get back to you on your last question. I’ll try to drag a grove into SD3 inside S1 (and make sure I have follow host selected). I’l’l try to do that in the next hour or so.
Thank you.

No problem mate. I am on the road, back home tomorrow, so replies maybe a little delayed.

Well, have a safe trip home!
I did drag a groove track in and played it. I can see data in the tracks, but no sound. I’m assuming the “Follow Host” should be blue, but I clicked it 0n/off and neither way allowed me to hear the sound. I also tried it with clicking the “S” & “M” buttons in SD3.
I’ve added 4 screen shots below to show my configuration. I’m sure there is just something simple that I’m missing.

Ok a quick glance it looks like you are getting audio to S1. It is something in S1 that’s not getting to headphones. Just running out the door.
Have been listening ok on any other track in S1?

What is your audio device setting in Studio One? Do you just not hear the S3 instrument? Can you play and hear audio tracks? Do other VST instruments work?

Hello Brad,
I have no other track in S1 at this time. I’m testing SD3 with S14 on this computer to see if can get it to work at this point. This is not my main computer for my work, so nothing else is here.
Hello Scott,
My audio device setting in S1 one is Windows audio and I have it and S1 @ 48k since I was getting a warning. Correct, I can not hear SD3 in S1. I did not try recording an audio track since I do not have USB DI (That is the reason I wanted to try to record manually – if I have to, I will buy as USB DI and keyboard controller when I get to the States and sell them when I leave, if it’s easier). I do not have any Studio One sound sets added to the computer because I don’t have enough room on the SSD, so none of S1’s instruments will play at this time. Normal audio (Wav., MP3.) is playing via Windows Audio Player.
I dragged a wav file into S1 and it immediately caused spikes and an electronic interference noise. When I actually played the track it is still spiked and I hear everything garbled and no recognizable sound. I’ve changed the IO settings, used both stereo and mono, did what I know and could think of, but I get no audio. I’ve sent a screen shot; there is audio data.
I did notice the Monitor button was off (even though S was on) and I turned it on. The moment I did I got clipping and could hear garbled sound.
Thank you.
George

It’s difficult to troubleshoot. No way of knowing if its something with a Studio One setting since you have no other instrument to check or playback an audio file.
Does S3 playback in standalone when not loaded in Studio One? Try that to see if that works. Does any audio playback on that computer using the same windows audio driver (YouTube, spotify, etc)? Is there a Windows Audio setting that is muted or turned down?

Hello Scott,
Yes, SD3 does play and have sound in standalone mode! All other playback (You Tube, News Sites, Etc) does work using the Windows audio. There are no Windows audio setting turned down or muted that I can find when I go into the audio settings. I ran the audio tests and they came out fine. The settings are on the Realtek Speaker/Headphone settings, not on the Virtual Audio Cable settings. All sound settings are at 100%, as are the settings in the volume mixer. None are muted. So that leads me to believe something in the settings of SD3 or S1 are wrong, and it is not the computer itself.
Because the faders are moving in the screen print it looks more like a problem between studio one and you’re sound card.
I am only guessing at the moment.
