I’m trying to set up SD3 to trigger drum sounds inside my DAW as a plug in. I was successful setting up SD3 in stand-alone mode to trigger with my Axiom49 MIDI controller but the option to select a controller seems to be missing from the settings dialog in the plugin. Below is a screenshot from my session and one from the help file showing how to set up the controller when using SD3 as a plugin. The “Select a MIDI device…” button is missing.

The reason I’m trying to do this is because I’m not a drummer so I use the grooves mostly but I need to program odd rhythms occasionally and it’s much easier to tap them in than try to figure out in the editor.
Am I missing something?

Which DAW are you trying to setup SD3 in? Usually triggering a VI (Virtual Instrument) is done within the DAW itself.

Sorry, it’s Studio One 4.
I use the Axiom with other instruments but this is the first time I’ve tried to set it up to trigger the drums in SD3.

Thanks but I have it set up already and it works fine with other virtual instruments, just not SD3. As I said I can set it up in SD3 stand alone mode and do exactly what I want but in the plugin there is no way to select a controller. The button used to do this in stand alone mode is missing in the plugin although the online help file shows it should be available.

That’s correct, you don’t need that button in when it’s in a DAW. SD3 is just another virtual instrument. When you drag SD3 from “Instruments” browser to a new track S1, you can either set the default input to All, or to a specific input device (in my case it’s a Nektar LX 88, yours would be your Axiom)

Of course to hear SD3 when you press a key, you need to set monitor or record arm the track it’s on.

Yes, set to ALL or Axion, neither sounds. The mouse will trigger the sounds but I want the Axiom to.
Sorry but I have to leave for an hour. Can we continue when I return please.

Monitor is selected (or the track is record armed)? Sure…. add something to this thread, I’ve subscribed to it when you’re back. I am working in front of my rig today, so I’ll see your update.

Well OK. If monitor button is engaged two things happen: the drums are triggered in SD3 both graphically and audibly and I can record to the track (in SD3 not the DAW).
That seems very odd behavior to me. One would think the monitor button would only mute or allow the audio, but it disables the controller. With monitor off the controller does not trigger SD3 so of course no sound is heard, however the mouse will still trigger the drums and sound regardless the status of the monitor button.
That’s weird man…
I’m still curious as to why the help file shows the button for MIDI setup in plugin mode and details how to use it but that button doesn’t show up in my session.

To the best of my knowledge thats the way S1 works with all third party VIs that have a standalone application. I use, UVI Workstation, Falcon and Kontakt. They all work in S1 Pro the same way. Selecting monitor or record arming the track activates the MIDI controller. I have more than one so I sometimes have to select the one I want active.
Falcon and UVI workstation both have an input section that is not available when running as a plug-in from any DAW, I use Pro Tools as well and the behaviour is the same.
Anyway, now you’re set!
