    Hi,

are you saying that all notes on the SD3 Instrument track BUT the Cymbals play back as expected?
Are those notes muted on the Instrument track?

Yes, it seems to be just some of the cymbal notes not triggering. I don’t think they’re muted on the instrument track. How do I tell?

If you enter the MIDI Edit window (usually by double-clicking the MIDI clip) you should see the MIDI notes as greyed out.
To toggle muted or not, you select the notes and Cmd/Ctrl + M.
If you notice no difference, I would like to take a look at your Session. You can ZIP the .ptx file and attach it to post here.

Ok, I just looked a little deeper and they aren’t muted, and they actually are triggering, I just couldn’t hear them. The problem is they’re really, really quiet, and only triggering a short little piece of a cymbal hit, almost like a closed high hat, but it does this no matter what cymbal I move the note too, including full open hits. Crash, china, doesn’t matter, it still only triggers the short little bit.

Any idea what could be causing that?

Which kit/preset are you using? Is this from a specific MIDI pack or groove?

Mac Studio M1 Max, RAM 64 GB, 1TB Drive, OSX 12.x/13.x and Windows 10 (VM)
DAW: Studio One Pro (always up to date)
DTX Express III (Extreme triggers), Nektar LX88
    OWC Thunderbay Mini (4 X 1TB Sata SSD), Express 4M2 (4 X 2TB M.2 SSD), Envoy Express (1TB M.2 SSD)
Presonus Quantum, Faderport & Faderport 8
    Black Lion Sparrow Mk2 A/D, FMR-RNP-RNC, MIDI Xpress 128, BM5A, KRK VXT4, Equator D5
    2020 Macbook Pro 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Audio(mobile rig)

It’s a kit I cobbled together. The MIDI isn’t from a pack or groove, it’s one I played myself. It played perfectly fine with SD2, if that matters.

Can you attach the MIDI file to a post here so we can take a look at it? If it, for some reason, doesn’t work, you can also use any file sharing system and post the link here.

Here’s the MIDI. It was made using SD2, so the mapping is off. Incidentally, the mapping in SD3 is kinda crazy, but anyway. Even if I move the notes to where they’re supposed to be, it still does it. Thanks for your help.

The reason why your cymbals aren’t making any sound is because the MIDI file contains Channel Aftertouch values directly after the cymbals are hit.
    – See the first screenshot; in that, I have opened the Grid Editor and selected to show Channel Aftertouch. To remove them, select all of the Channel Aftertouch “squares” and delete them
    – The second screenshot shows where mutes of the selected cymbal are setup. In the Mute Tail Trigger box, you can select to either trigger a muted cymbal with Aftertouch, Note Off (the end of the note will create a mute), or none.

Does this clear things up for you?

Aftertouch was it. Thank you very much. I didn’t even think of aftertouch and I’m not sure how long it would’ve taken me to track that down as the problem. I recorded the MIDI tracks in ACID Pro and completely forgot it recorded aftertouch. I was using Superior 2 at the time and it apparently didn’t respond to aftertouch. But it’s worked out now, so thank you again.

Now I just have to work out the weird mapping SD3 has, then comes the hardest part of actually getting SD3 not to sound like crap.
