Hello,
Pressing “play” from SD3’s Grid Editor does not make the host (Logic) playhead play also (“follow host” engaged). Is this expected behavior?
Furthermore, if SD3’s “loop” is ON, the transport gets more confused than a cat at laser tag… I.e., SD3 loops, but Logic doesn’t – it just ignores the loop point and keeps playing. Is this also expected behavior? 🙂
Cheers,
P.
The host is Logic, pressing play in Logic will make the transport in SD3 play if you have “Follow Host” engaged. (or at least it I believe is designed to work that way, that’s how I use it in Pro Tools and Studio One).
Loop in SD3 will loop through a selected range in the SD3 track, while Logic runs an entire track. (for example; you have you have selected a 4 bar range selected to loop in SD3. Your Logic track is 48 bars. Pressing “Play” in Logic will loop through the same 4 bars in the SD3 track while playing all 48 bars in Logic. (At least that’s howI use it in PT and S1).
Hope this helps clear things up.

Then I guess it is expected behavior, I just don’t see why that would be useful… I would expect that the timeline and playhead are always synced between SD3 and the host. But no big deal, I’ll get used to it – at least now I know nothing is broken 🙂 Thanks!
Wow this is so annoying, I can’t believe this is how people use it, I must be missing something…
“Space” being play is second nature to me, and I can’t get used to “shift+space” being start and stop from within the grid editor. I keep hitting only space and then Logic starts playing from whichever random point the playhead was at, and the timeline shifts and argh 🙂 🙂
And then when I kind of get used to shift+space, then when I exit SD3, I keep hitting the combo while in Logic. Is something wrong with me?? 😀 😀
Having an option where both timelines and playheads are 100% synced would be awesome… For example as ReWire works with Logic and Reason…

Thanked by: Rick McKayI really didn’t expect it to be this awkward either. If I click on bar 10 in the SD interface and hit play, I want to hear the whole project (in Logic X) starting at bar 10. Is it really impossible to integrate this? Even just as an option?
Plug-ins are controlled by the DAW. They exist within the little slice of the DAW’s environment and don’t get much permission to control it, especially in the case of Logic.
If you want to hear the whole project in Logic, click on the playhead within Logic. I use Logic as well, and it not awkward and is pretty much how various DAWs do it (I use Reason as Maschine as well).

Thanks for your post. I no longer feel so alone in my struggles! 😀
I find the whole “playhead” system really annoying because I have to remember a different set of commands for each unit. Why couldn’t they just have EZD, SD3, EZKeys, EZBass work with the same controls when “Follow Host” isn’t turned on.
Also, what is going on with the playhead controls in the Toontrack software? None of the manual address how to make it stay in place, return to start or anything. I had to troll the interweb to find out about the “shift-spacebar” and ‘alt-spacebar” commands, neither of which are what I want. How do I send it back to the start, zoom in in place, and generally stop jumping away from the area I’m trying to edit?
To be honest, as much as I love my Toontrack stuff, having them all look very similar in layout, yet all very different in practice, is a pain. Bandmate, AudioTracker, etc.. All very similar on the surface, with different names, different functions and different features. I spend a LOT of my time trying to do simple things, only to realise that I’m trying to do something that is a feature of a different app and wondering where certain functions are!!
It is very annoying to just between the DAW and the editor for simple tasks like moving the playhead. Wish it was better integrated because it’s a pain the way it is… and in general I do really like the editor a lot.
As a note to anyone struggling with this. You can use an application called Keyboard Maestro to fix the spacebar issue (sadly, not the playhead position).
I created a macro to send a midi CC message instead of the normal spacebar behavior of stop and play (or creating a space while type). I then specified the exact window (the Toontrack editor) that needed to be in focus in order for that behavior to be triggered. This way I don’t lose normal functionality for the spacebar but when the editor is open, I can control both the DAW and editor playback at the same time!

Logic’s key commands will step the playheads and the “Go to Position” key command will take to the bar you want. You can also use a control surface to jog the playheads to the position you want. So there are various ways around this and you can do it with SD3 in focus. As I stated above, SD3 will not be able to control Logic. Plug-ins are sandboxed and can’t have access to their environments.
