I use a Nektar LX88 keyboard with Studio One 4 and SD3 all the time. I have to ask do you want to create the MIDI in an instrument track within Studio One or in SD3 in the editor, either way I have experience with.

Mac Studio M1 Max, RAM 64 GB, 1TB Drive, OSX 12.x/13.x and Windows 10 (VM)
DAW: Studio One Pro (always up to date)
DTX Express III (Extreme triggers), Nektar LX88
    OWC Thunderbay Mini (4 X 1TB Sata SSD), Express 4M2 (4 X 2TB M.2 SSD), Envoy Express (1TB M.2 SSD)
Presonus Quantum, Faderport & Faderport 8
    Black Lion Sparrow Mk2 A/D, FMR-RNP-RNC, MIDI Xpress 128, BM5A, KRK VXT4, Equator D5
    2020 Macbook Pro 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Audio(mobile rig)

Awesome – thanks for helping! I want to create the midi track in SD3 in the editor playing the keyboard instead of my mouse. I can’t figure out how to hear the drums using the keyboard while recording (or when not recording too) in the editor.

Note that this “problem” is when using SD3 as a plugin in Studio One. When I use SD3 in stand alone mode, I can do exactly what I am trying to do.

    Again, thanks!

It sounds like you 90% there then. I will summarize the setup bits as I assume you already have it done. Any questions you can add to the thread and I can answer them.
    1) Setup the keyboard as an external device. (In Studio One)
    2) create an instrument track and insert SD3
    3) Make sure you have at least Monitor selected on instrument track in Studio One with SD3 inserted; (the little speaker next to record arm on the track)
3.1) You can select record as well with the same results.
    4) Open SD3 and Make sure “Follow Host” is selected in the SD3 transport.
    5) To make things easier, select “Click in Play” in the Studio One metronome settings.
    6) In the SD3 transport record arm the track (Stop/Start recording MIDI is what the contextual help calls it)
    7) In Studio One, press “Play”…..
    8) start tapping your keyboard.

There is one gotcha, as the recording starts when you hit play, it’s hard to get that first beat in bar 1. Studio One doesn’t seem to want to apply pre count when playing, only when recording. So in cases like this I usually start on the second bar and everything lines up OK.

Also SD3 adheres to MIDI merge so, you can record your snare for example and then go back and record the kick, hats, etc… and it will merge with the existing MIDI.

Let me know if this helps….

Yup – you helped me figure out exactly how to do what I was trying to do – thanks a lot! The gotcha is not an issue for me – I hit play and am typically just doing a couple bars and when it loops back to the fist click, I hit it (kick, or whatever) and of course the grid editor is great for fixing things that are off (and making drums sound sterile if you go to far!).

So you’ve done your good deed today – again, thanks a million!

Glad it all worked (and my ramblings made some sense)
    Cheers!
