Hi,
First post – and loving SD3…
I’ve a 2011 iMac (24 GB RAM) with a single FireWire port which I use as my main DAW. But I also have a mid-2015 MacBook Pro (16 GB RAM) which has 3 thunderbolt connections and no FireWire that I use when playing my Roland kit. I have SD3 application on both and have the sounds on an external HDD (7200 Glyph with FireWire) which I can connect to either machine, but I use a FireWire to thunderbolt adaptor when using the MBP. Anyway I am finding that I get occasional dropouts when playing and I’m trying to work out if it’s to do with the hard disk read/write speed so my questions are as follows:
a) I’m assuming that not all sounds are loaded into RAM and they are partly streamed. Is it possible to load all sounds into RAM?
b) would there be any improvement in replacing the external drive with an SSD via a FireWire or usb3 connection – I know thunderbolt will be faster but I want to be able to connect the same SSD to the older iMac?
c) is it possible that the dropouts could be occurring as a sult of too low a latency setting?
Thanks in antic.

I can help with questions a-b as they related. SD3 as with all Toontrack products load the entire current sample set into RAM. There’s no disk streaming, therefore a faster drive will speed up load time, when you select a new kit or preset, but will not impact actual performance. I have all my Toontrack samples on an external USB3 drive so they can be moved to the older MacBook or another machine that only has USB.
Drop outs could occur as a result of latency and your processor/interface not being to keep up, play around with buffer settings, sample rate, perhaps?
