I can help with questions a-b as they related. SD3 as with all Toontrack products load the entire current sample set into RAM. There’s no disk streaming, therefore a faster drive will speed up load time, when you select a new kit or preset, but will not impact actual performance. I have all my Toontrack samples on an external USB3 drive so they can be moved to the older MacBook or another machine that only has USB.

Drop outs could occur as a result of latency and your processor/interface not being to keep up, play around with buffer settings, sample rate, perhaps?
