Undoubtedly SD3 is THE BEST drum production plugin of all time. Svensk uppfinningsrikedom på sitt bästa !!
I have been writing and recording in my studio and world class studios like the Dallas Sound Lab for more than 40 years. I have been through 100’s of real drummers, drum machines of various kinds and qualities, drum sample libraries some great some not so great. I have bought some very expensive drum software including a recent competitors from California that cost over $600 and was a joke in my opinion.
But I have never EVER heard or used anything as good as SD3! It simply kicks ass.
The amount of work that has gone into the production, mic’ing and recording of the samples is just incredible. BRAVO Toontrack really heartfelt congratulations on this wonderful tool for writing and recording musicians.
Does it have flaws? Yes, like anything it has its issues and you can’t make a one trick pony that pleases everyone. But again it is OUTSTANDING IMHO!
One thing that is a little disappointing at least to me is the amount of groves you get when you purchase an SDX. I understand that the SDX is not about grooves its about samples and drum sounds. However, you pay a hefty price for the SDX and giving the folks who invest in secondary products associated with SD3, an extra bonus of generous variety in midi grooves, seems a small thing to do really. But a big deal to someone who doesn’t play drums and needs the variety of choices. Not just the simple stuff but some new styles with enriching finesse. Maybe even a collection of individual master midi libraries that are way more inclusive and deeper product that covers every possible aspect of a certain drumming technique?
I bring this up today because after buying the Rock Foundry I was a little dismayed at the lack of serious groove inclusions in the product. I had very hi hopes that it would be extensively ass kicking and useful in the groove department. Don’t take this wrong, it is only a little constructive criticism from someone who knows software and QC. I have been a beta tester and product RD development tech for a long time. Currently testing for several large developers. I have worked with Sony, Microsoft, iZotope and a lot of others. It’s just a thought but maybe a little more bang for the buck? SD3 is awesome, Rock Foundry kicks serious ass and is excellent but the midi groves which seem to be acceptably good, could surely be extensively enriching, artistically deeper and quantitatively much better Toontrack. That is all.
