EZdrummer 2 is not handling tempo correctly for me, in any beat involving triplets, ie shuffle, swing beat, 12-8, etc.
Example: my project tempo is 88 bpm. If I choose any “non-straight-8’s” beat from EZdrummer and set it to follow project tempo, it plays 1.5x too slow. It seems to be counting in 2’s, not in 3’s. To get it to match the project tempo I have to set EZdrummer to 132 bpm. It works just fine for any straight-8’s beat, but not for anything in 3’s.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a glitch in EZdrummer? Is there a workaround for this? (Calculating the tempo as I did in the above example is not really satisfactory, since EZdrummer seems to only accept whole number tempos, which is not always going to exactly match) Please help, anyone!
Hi,
which host are you using?
Which version number is displayed in the plugin interface?
The EZdrummer 2 plugin follows the Tempo timeline set in your host.

A side note – EZdrummer 2 can handle decimals as a tempo – if you enter 153.35 it will use that. However, a rounded number will be shown. It’s problematic since it’s so hidden for the users, we will look into that.

John, I’m using Sonar X2 Studio. EZdrummer IS following the host tempo, but not correctly, it plays at exactly 2/3 of host tempo. Henrik, good to know about the decimals in the tempo, I can perhaps use that as a workaround.
I’m not sure I’m following your problem. I’m trying to duplicate your issue but can’t seem to do so.
I set my project tempo to 88BMP. I make sure that my browser is not set to ‘Preview Original Tempo’ and that ‘Follow Host’ is active.
If I play a 4/4 beat at 88 bpm it plays 4 beats per measure with the 1/4 note getting one beat. If I preview a shuffle 4/4 (or swing 4/4) it plays back at exactly the same tempo only the 8th notes are swing and not straight. If I play a 6/8 beat at 88 bpm, it also sounds the way it should…6 beats (clicks) at 88bpm with the 8th notes getting one beat. It obviously sounds different than a measure of 4/4 at 88 bpm because the time signature is 6/8. The 88bpm is a constant but what gets ‘one beat’ changes based on the time signature.
Can you post audio examples of what you are talking about?

Hi Scott,
Here are 4-bar audio samples of what I’m talking about. As you can see from the screenshot, “Preview Original Tempo” is not checked, but “Follow Project Tempo” is. The project tempo is 88 bpm, the drums are playing at aroung 58 bpm.
I agree, the issue is what exactly gets one beat. I guess technically it would be a dotted quarter in 6/8 or 12/8 time. Common practise, though, is to count a shuffle beat in 4/4 time, with each quarter note divided into 3 eighths rather than 2 (as in straight 8’s). I tried changing the time signature in EZD to 6/8, didn’t make any difference. Maybe I’m just choosing the wrong groove from EZD? I’ve looked at purchasing the Blues EZX pack, but am wary if it’s going to have this same issue.
From your pic, it looks like you are running EZD2 in standalone mode and not inside your DAW. Are you loading EZD2 in your host or trying to sync EZD2 standalone with your DAW tracks? In the pic of EZD2, you have a Straight 4/4 groove selected. It would not be the groove I would choose as your other tracks are playing swing. I would look in the Swing 4/4 folder. If you don’t have any other MIDI pack besides the library that shipped with EZD2, I would try the Swing Metal 130BPM song and use Edit Play Style to tame the beats to fit (change the hi hat to closed, lower velocities, etc.) See my mp3 that I quickly threw together.

Thanks Scott. I am definitely using the program from within Sonar, not as standalone. See attached screenshot. I will look in the Swing 4/4 folder, it seemed to work for you! I wonder if I should set the time signature to 6/8 or 12/8 BEFORE choosing a groove? I’ll experiment a bit. Thanks again for taking the time to help me with this.
I wouldn’t change the time signature. It’s a 4/4 swing groove.
I’m away from my EZD2 rig at the moment but I’ll use the Search function in EZD2 to find the exact drum groove I would use for that song. Or you can try it and engage the ‘Show Web Shop MIDI’ button in your search.

If you drag a groove that’s not 4/4 to an empty Song Track, e.g. 6/8, it will change automatically to the dragged time signature.
If you drag any following grooves, the time signature on the EZdrummer 2 Song Track will not change again unless you empty the Song Track (or do it manually).
