Maybe this is an overly simple question but what’s the best way to get a drum track into a DAW? My DAW of choice is Garageband. What I’d like to be able to do is get the drum track into the DAW and still be able to edit it.
I can create the drum track in EZDrummer 2 standalone. Then if I either export as WAV or select and drag it into Garageband, I’m left with one long, continuous track.
If I open EZDrummer 2 within the Garageband, create the drum track and drag it into a track in Garageband, I’m again left with one long, continuous track.
The only way I know how to do it is what I did with the original EZDrummer which was open EZDrummer from within Garageband, go to the EZDrummer browser and drag from there onto a track in Garageband. By doing it this way, I could lengthen or shorten or change the drum track from within Garageband.
So, what’s the best way for me to get my drum track into Garageband and still be able to edit it?
Thanks.
I would use EZdrummer 2 the same was as EZdrummer 1 in Garageband if you want to edit each MIDI file.
My method of working is I use the Song Track in EZD2 as I’m building my drum track. That way I can take advantage of the Edit Play Style option to tweak the MIDI. For me, it’s better at getting a realistic variation than trying to tweak in my DAW. Since EZD2 syncs with my host, I can then create the rest of my track by adding instruments as I want. My drum track is still in EZD2 so i can tweak it there. When I’m happy with my entire song, I’ll drag the whole Song Track in EZD2 to my DAW. Then, I can tweak here and there in the piano roll editor.

Hi Scott and thanks for the reply.
I missed the “Follow Host” button. I believe that lets me do what you’re doing. I open a software track in the DAW and bring up EZD. In EZD I create a drum track to follow a scratch melody track previously recorded in the DAW that’s about the length of the song. This lets me get my whole drum track down and it makes it easy to add variations as the song goes along.
This has led to a couple of additional questions:
1. I can tweak the drum groove in the Edit Play Style window. But I don’t know how to add different drums in specific locations in this window. I find I need to go to the Drums tab where I can loop the groove, hit record and hit the specific drums when I want to add them. Does this sound correct? Or should I be able to add a specific drum hit from the Edit Play Style window?
2. Is there any way to resize the EZD window? It’s fine on my desktop computer but it takes most of the screen on my laptop.
3. Are there any keyboard shortcuts? If I want to remove a drum groove segment, I need to right click and select Remove. It’d be great to just hit a single key.
4. I am unable to lengthen a drum groove. I can shorten it but not lengthen it. I’m using either copy and paste or holding down the option key and dragging the groove to make a new copy. Is there a way to lengthen the groove just by dragging it?
Thanks again for your help.
1. The way you can add drum hits is to use the amount knob. It will try to add hits where it makes sense in a musical way. Further, you can copy or move the hits from one drum to another (if you, for example, want what the tom 3 is playing to be played on the floor tom) by using copy/cut/paste found on the right click menu on each drum.
If you want to add hits on an exact position you should (as you have done) record them, or drag the MIDI to your host and manually edit it.
2. EZdrummer 2’s windows is not resizable.
3. Keyboard shortcuts have been discussed a lot in the past, but the short answer is that hosts don’t let keyboard shortcuts to be used in plugins.
4. Lengthen MIDI blocks is only possible by copying them, not in the way Logic and Garageband does it.
When we design the programs we discuss these kinds of questions and solutions for months (and sometimes years), and trust me on this one – features that seems easy to just add to the product never are We are, however, constantly updating our products and we try to fulfill our customers needs so keep posting questions/ideas!

Henrik, thanks for the reply. This helped immensely.
It seems like I’ve owned EZDrummer for years but have only recently started using it in a more purposeful way. I commend what you all did with the move to EZDrummer 2. You took a good product and made it even better. In every way!
My questions are based on my experience with other software (and sometimes in other industries) and my work flow. Sometimes the obvious is too obvious. And sometimes it’s not.
Thanks again.
Why is the “Follow Host” tab missing?
How do I get EZ Drummer 3 into Cubase 5?
Why is the “Follow Host” tab missing?
EZdrummer version: 3.0.0

I would guess you are launching the standalone application rather than a plug-in from a DAW. How are you launching EZDrummer 3?
And
Why are you still using 3.0.0?
And
Maybe take a look at @shootie’s video here: https://youtu.be/CLuj0Ek6LMo

How Do I Install EZD3 in the DAW ?
If you installed EZD3 (ran the installer) it’s installed. Did you look at the video link?

I did watch the video but he did not show how to install. I have it installed but everything I have read says to go to the studio tab in Cubase. I don’t have a studio tab at the top in Cubase.
The problem I’m having is that when I drag a MIDI track from EXD3 to Cubase it plays as a keyboard not drums. everything I read online says to press the “Follow Host ” button in EZD3. Again that button does not show up because EZD3 is installed as a stand alone.
This is where I’m at.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
How do I get EZ Drummer 3 into Cubase 5?
EZdrummer version: 3.0.0
Operating system: Windows 11
Are you running Cubase in 64-bit mode?
Not to mention, Cubase 5 is 13+ years old. Is it capable of loading VST3 (I’m not a Cubase person) as that is what EZ Drummer 3 is.

Thanked by: BradAlso make sure that Cubase has “C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3” in it list of folders to search for plugins and make sure EZDrummer 3 is installed there.
