Hi.
I know this has been touched on before and while I’ve searched the forum and found queries that were close, I still can’t find the answer I’m looking for, so forgive me if I’m rep[repeating things…
I’m using Logic Pro X (10.0.7) with the latest EZD2 and would like too know tthe exact steps to get multi-channel output so I can control each section of the given EZD2 kit’s mixer in Logic. I did watch the video at:
http://www.toontrack.com/faq/how-do-i-set-up-ezdrummer-for-multichannel-operation-in-logic/
but because it features Logic 9, the controls are different and I couldn’t find the equivalent in Pro X.
Could you please tell me the steps needed to set up EZD in LPX for multi-channel output as if (to quote Denzel Washington) I’m a three year old?
Thanks very much!
Ooh… also, is there an updated Multi channel Template for LPX that I can download? If so, please include the link.
Thanks!
I just did this for the first time myself a few nights ago…
It’s really as easy as the video that you’ve referenced above; even though the interfaces for Logic & EZDrummer have changed a litttle.
Step 1. in Logic, create an Instrument Track, using EZDrummer Multi-Output (16xStereo) as your instrument plug-in
Step 2. in EZDrummer, on the MIXER tab, select Multichannel from the Channel dropdown list just above the Kit-Piece name of the channelstrip. You’ll see the output routing change from channels 1&2 to a default multi-output routing courtesy of Toontrack or you can create a routing of your own choosing.
Step 3. in Logic’s MIXER window, a ‘+/-‘ will now be available for you to add as many AUX channels as needed for your EZDrummer output routing.
Step 4. typically, Logic will automatically add the EZDrummer routing to the Input of each of these new AUX channels, but you may want or need to make your own selections or even route some EZDrummer outputs to more than one AUX channel in Logic
To Clarify:
Step 3. in Logic’s MIXER window, a ‘+/-‘ will now be available just below the EZDrummer channel fader for you to add as many AUX channels as needed for your EZDrummer output routing.
PS. I’m not sure to what you’re referencing as “an updated Multi channel Template for LPX” but once you’ve set up the routing and whatever other tracks, etc, you can save your own personalized “Multi channel Template for LPX”…maybe even a few of them, one for each drumkit and routing layout you create.
gseshleman,
THANK YOU! You’ve been of great help. I do have a few questions for you…
I did as you said and used the Nashville set as my test, as it has a large number of mixer channels and it has become my favorite sounding kit.
When I clicked the plus button in Logic to get my aux channels, it stopped at 15, while there are 16 channels in the EZD mixer. I’m guessing this might have to do with which channels are coming out as stereo pairs vs. mono.
In Logic, every aux channel came out as stereo, and I’m wondering if some of these should be mono – i.e. things like kick, snare-top,. snare-bottom, etc, should be mono, while the overheads should be stereo. IF this is correct, how do I set up the Logic channels so they can be either mono or stereo?
Forgive me if these questions are so beginner-like, but I just switched from Garageband to Logic and am eager to push the limits.
Also, is it possible to create a “channel stack” for the drums or must theh remain truly separate tracks or channels?
Thanks again for your help!

No, the 1st Stereo output is on the Instrument Track, 1+15=16

Well, you can’t change the track width per mic, the EZdrummer 2 outputs are all Stereo. Without going into technicalities, it’s more limiting and complicating (for the user) with regards to the variety of current and future EZX:s to set a specific number of the outputs to Mono only.
It’s nothing “bad” with having a Mono source coming out a a Stereo output, it’s worse the other way around.
You could probably be clever with routing and splitting the Aux output to separate Mono Aux Subs but I’m not a Logic guru, so I’m not sure how to do that in the current version.
Also, is it possible to create a “channel stack” for the drums or must theh remain truly separate tracks or channels?
AFAICT, the stacking in Logic is more a convenience thing than audio affecting.

Thanks so much for all the help! After some experimentation and few gaffs, I got it working! YES!!! I then saved my work as a template for future use. What a relief.
Every day I’m loving EZD2 more and more. One of the best drummers I’ve ever worked with!
Another chapter…
After successfully getting multi-channel operation in Logic Pro X, I now want to push the boundaries a bit. I typically use two instances of EZD2, one for drums and then another using the Latin EZX for percussion (I’m a percussion freak).
Can I use the second instance of EZD Latin in multi-channel IN ADDITION to the multi-channel use of the basic drums?
If so, is there a specific order to go about this so as not to conflict channel assignment?
Thanks!

Well, I think I can answer this for myself. The answer is… no.
Logic was all set to accept as many new channels as I wanted, but EZD2 can only assign channel numbers that are linked to the number of channels in a given drum set’s mixer. In other words, the Latin EZX, for example, has 16 channels, and even though that many channels were already in use by my first use of EZD in my main drum track, the Latin EZX mixer didn’t see that and would only allow for channel assignments for 1-16 and not anything higher, regardless of the fact that I needed it to *start* at channel 17.
To TT support, is there any way around this? Can I somehow manually override this by typing in a channel number or will each instance of EZD only start at channel 1?
If this is the case, the only other work around I can think of is to splice up each essential part of my percussion grooves into *its own* EZD instance and run A LOT of EZD plugins. Methinks that may be too much work for the payload, but I may still try it.
Would love it of there is a legit way to do this.
Hi,
I think you have misunderstood some part of the setting up (or I didn’t understand your question correctly).
Each EZdrummer 2 instance can have 16 stereo outputs. You assign mic faders freely to outputs in the EZdrummer 2 mixer and you add outputs from the plugin to the Logic Pro X mixer by clicking the ‘+’ sign on the Instrument Track in the Logic Pro X mixer.
The 16 available outputs are hard wired to each instance, so you cannot route sounds from one instance to the output of another.
Instrument and Aux faders in the Logic Pro X mixer can be named and deleted.
So… I fail to see a problem here.
Is there still one?

John,
thanks! You set me straight. It was the internal channel assignments in the EZD mixer vs. the numbers in Logic’s mixer that threw me, but you are, indeed, correct! I just ignored the numbers and found that the second instance of EZD did, in fact, allow me to assign the individual channels of the Latin EZX to its own channels in Logic! Now I have 32 tracks of EZD, which is dizzying, but I get full control over my percussion, just as I do with my drums.
I’m thrilled with this! So glad you piped in with “the truth!”
Folks, you gotta try this. It’s worth the extra time and the extra control will allow your mix to pop and you won’t have to compromise and lose any distinction in your dense percussion grooves.
Love me my EZD!
Multi outs not working when I click the + button on the EZdrummer2 instrument channel in Logic Pro mixer.
Yes, I selected the mutli-channel outs on the EZD mixer.
All I ever get is 1 aux channel added. That’s it. What’s going on?
When it has worked in the past and I open an old session with it all the auxes are crossed out (see attachment)
Help
I just want to say that, that video saved me a ton of headache. THANK YOU!
exdrummer2, dfhEx, windows 7
If I wanted to run a multi track out.put through some hardware would it still work even though my hardware is mono? Just because the ezdrummer tracks in logic are always in stereo??
Hi cib85,
I presume you mean that you have several hardware outputs that are mono outputs?
Yes, you can assign to multiple hardware outputs in Logic, L and R separately.
EDIT – Forget what I wrote earlier, my brain plays tricks on me – The EZdrummer 2 standalone application can also multi out to separate hardware outputs, when you check the ‘Use multi-out’ in Settings>Audio/MIDI Setup>Out channels.

John

I know how to do this and have been doing it since I bought ezd3 (which has transformed my work). I am using logic pro 11. (Intel version). However, sometimes the multichannel set-up just doesn’t work. I will go through all the steps but the + and – signs don’t work. I.e. They don’t create more channels. You can see on the screenshot that the + sign is greyed out. ( I tried a screenshot of the whole page setup but your site said it was too big.)
Also there has never been an indicator arrow that shows we are on multichannel, rather than stereo, output, whereas there is one for ‘audience or drummer perspective’. Is this part of the problem?
Thanks AJW
