So, do each of the pre-sets have their own characteristics?

Yes, there are some things going on ‘under the hood’ on some of the presets that aren’t adjustable via the EZdrummer mixer.

Actually that’s brilliant. It explains why I can’t seem to get it sounding right. Is there any info out there on each preset’s characteristic?
Also, is this true for all the different ezx kits?

I don’t believe there is any info on the presets. I think they are there to ‘click and try’, so-to-speak. I’m not entirely sure about if it is true in other EZXs or not but I would assume that there may be other presets that use the same technique.

Having said that, I can open up the Rock Solid EZX in S2 and see what the presets are doing ‘under the hood’ as the parameters are available there. For instance, in your ‘Gated’ preset in Rock Solid, I can see that the ‘Fade’ parameter on the channel strips in the S2 Mixer is being adjusted to achieve the ‘gated’ sound. I can then adjust it myself to taste.

Of course, if you are a ‘tweaker’ then upgrading to S2 to have access to those parameters may be something to consider.

So I can’t access that “Fade” parameter can I? If I can’t, that’s not an issue.

One of the things I like about EZ is that there’s not a lot of ‘tweaking’.
I had tried BFD Eco and changed to EZ because, with BFD, I felt I had to know too much about drum production and engineering.
I couldn’t get BFD to “sit” in the mix as easily as EZ.

If I know that the preset parameters are different I can experiment but any info would be great, I can’t find anything on your site though.
    Thanks very much, Scott.

To be fair, although SD2 is far more capable and sophisticated than EZD, you don’t have to touch anything you don’t want to.

If I load Rock Solid into SD2, it sounds exactly the same as it does if I load it into EZD. The presets work and sound identical in SD2 also. The difference is I can tweak and shape much more than I could in EZD.

If you use one of SD2’s own sound libraries, they do sound less processed (let’s face it everything does next to Rock Solid ) straight out of the tin, but load a combined preset or Producer Preset and you have an instant processed sound to use “as-is” or as a starting point. As I’ve just posted on another thread, the beauty of the CPs and PPs is you have access to everything to back-off some of that processing if you want to, it’s not a “take it or leave it” setting.

I didn’t appreciate this when I first got Superior2, but you don’t need to be an engineering whizz to use SD2, you can just choose presets from a menu if you want to, and you can use all of the EZX library packs.

Of course that does defeat much of the purpose of having SD2, but you can use it without studio training.

I’m beginning to think I may have to bite the bullet and go down the route of “tweaking”. I”ve been sitting here for 3 hours and nothing I seem to do can get the RockSolid or Nashville kits to sound right.
The kick drum on the Nashville sounds like s**t, and the toms on that and RSolid ring for about a bar! Actually I’m really disappointed with these 2.

Maybe I’ve got to that point with all this, I thought EZ was sitting in the mix better but I just can’t get to that last step.
After purchasing 4 or so EZ kits, I may go back and explore BFD Eco, I just can’t afford SD.

Problem is, tweaks take a short time to do in but you do need SD2 so you would be missing what you want by simply turning your back.
I have BFD2 and Eco and all their kits have no consistency in volume at all and you will find it harder not easier.
When i got Rock Solid i tweaked the snare to be less wet and perhaps shortened a few elements too, basically did a few kits in 20 minutes i had my goto kits for SD2.I probably would not use it as it is in EZ.
Def SD2 and all the TT stuff has a really good consistency so it is easier to audition and not get a distorted loud kit then a soft kit as messed up as i experience with BFD 2 and have spent a whole heap on it too.
Sure there are some good points for it too and Eco does have some good points compared to EZ but i think EZ wins hands down.

Are you running multi out so you can do more from your daw and have you tried using more than one instance of EZ to help give a few more options on the fly.?

Route the toms to a channel in your daw and use a gate plugin.

What he said for a quick fix.
End of financial year sales just around the corner. Keep an eye on all the big software vendors. Audio deluxe is my dealer dujour due to favourable exchange rates. I got Superior + Metal FoundarySDX bundle US$199 (+post) last year and haven’t regretted incuring my wifes wrath since. The sd crossgrade is currently 179, 279 with an sdx
Hope thats within budget because you won’t regret it. If FX are anywhere near as nice as Toon, you maybe able to offset the purchase by hocking BFD licence on the bay.

In the meantime MULTI OUT, and experiment with effects in your DAW. I have EzMix and alot of add ons, put I still pull out the pedal board on Logic Studio every now and then. Mix with your ears.

Thanks for all the info. After selling a couple of bits on ebay I may be able to afford SD on the “crossgrade” thing.
It does seem like I could “tweak out” all the niggly issues. A good friend of mine (pro musician) who uses BFD did say he’d heard that SD “pi**es all over BFD….”
Do the EZX still work well with SD?
If I crossgrade do I still keep EZ Drummer??

The EZX’s will work in SD with the added advantage of total tweakability. I still use EZD as well, and yes you do keep it. It’s handy for me as my writing partner only has EZD, therefore when he sends a session over I can open it up and get to work without having to make any changes.

Thanks again everyone for the input.
I have been experimenting with multi-outs and at the moment, on the present song I’m working on, I have 2 instances of ez running to get the toms from standard kit replacing RS toms. It’s a bit “Heath Robinson” though and I do have some inconsistencies but it works. Today, I’m going to check out who has SD at the best price. I think Audioeluxe are doing it at a the best price but that would be a download
    thanks

Have you found the EZdrummer presets in the menu by the ‘EZ Mixer’
header in the lower left part of the GUI?
