I am just trying to make some simple beats as pass-through for some videos I am working on. I load up Garageband and EZDrummer. I am using the keyboard mapping to keep things simple.

However, the latency is horrible! I cannot keep the beat with the metronome.

I have a Macbook Pro i7 2.2 GHz (I7-2675QM) machine with 8 GB of RAM. I have closed all progams and disabled all non-functional processes.

This computer is more than enough to handle beats. I am not even multi-tracking it yet.

please advise.

I have the same setup and I am having no issues at all. The only thing I can think of is your sample rate is set to high in CORE Audio. I would look I think Default is 128/44.1 I am using 97/44.1 I have 9 EZD tracks running I did it all as one track and then split them out so that I could do effects and EQ to each drum, then 4 layered vocal tracks, Live Bass, and Live Guitar and there is no LAG. Start there.It could also be the speed of your Hard Drive as well. I am using a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Drive 7200RPM as compared to the 500GB 5400RPM drive in the macbook.
