Hi,
I’m 42 years old and a real technophobe so please bear with me.
I’ve have EZDrummer version 1.1.4 installed on my Mac for the last couple of years, basically as a tool to record live drums on my backing tracks as I also play guitar and sing BUT I’ve recently landed my dream job playing drums in a band working 6 days a week There are issues with neighbours though and that old classic “Can you turn those drums down?”
Instead of using my acoustic kit I’ve started to you my Roland TD-8 midi’d up via a Midisport 2×2 to a MacBook ( spec – 2.1GHz, 2GB, 667MHz, DDR2 SDRAM ). It’s almost identical to the system I use at home through Logic only on stage I take a 10M mini jack-RCA out to the desk. It’s basic and it works… well, nearly.
There are problems with latency ( I’ve read a few of the posts regarding this but haven’t really understood the answers ) but it’s maybe me and a few musicians in the audience that’ll have the ears to notice. The latency button feature in Logic corrects this to a certain degree but not totally and the Ride cymbal bell is noticable. How does a stand alone plug in work and will it, if I’ve understood well enough, solve the latency issues?
The other thing is that I’ve managed to split the channels on my EZDrummer using Logic so I can have more editing power and control over my output levels BUT I only have Bass Drum, Snare top & Bottom, Hi Hats, Toms, Overhead & Room. My ride cymbal especially is lost and although the overall sound is much better than the Roland brain it’s still not got that “WOW” factor I was aiming for. I’ve seen other drummers getting a great live sound with no latency on YouTube and I feel I’m only a small step away.
Any advice at all would be great and I am willing to upgrade if necessary.
Thanks for your patience,
CIB
Latency: First off, try running EZD or SD2 using TT Solo as a host. It’s optimised for live playing and it might solve some of your issues straight-away.

SD2.3, NYII, C&V, MC, MF, ED, Latin Perc, Twisted, Pop, N1H, Electronic, Classic, Funkmasters, Rock Solid, Blues, Indie-Folk.
Regarding the Ride Cymbal Volume.
Simply Turn down all other elements in your O/Head fader and the turn that fader up.Perhaps the room too.
Playing live with the drums in a room and amp could mean you could actually take most of the room or overheads out and have them act more as a cymbal channel as there will already be a room sound, key is to experiment a bit.
You may try using a compressor on the room or O/Heads outputs but don’t overdo it.You can also turn up the Sens on your roland for the Cymbal trigger to around the 9 -14 which is high but will bring up the softer hits.
In your audio prefs within Logic your I/O buffer should be set to 64 not higher for good timing.
Apart from the advice to lower your hardware buffer size as much as your computer can take and using Toontrack solo as host, don’t forget to update to 1.3.1.
If you want to control your kit pieces separately; pitch, envelope, bleeds, mix and stack sounds, etc. and designate their separate outputs, I do recommend looking into any of the crossgrade deals from EZdrummer to Superior 2.
EZdrummer wasn’t really intended for E-drum use (but works if you use Toontrack solo) but its bigger brother Superior 2 really is.

Hi and thanks for the super quick and clear responses.
Ok, I think I’ve got my head around this. First of all, download TT Solo and use instead of Logic – a host must be the lingo:) uninstalling logic first as I’m pretty sure my processing power will be less with Logic running???
Someone asked about lowering faders on the mixer. On EZ, as I understand it, the overhead affects all the drums so I don’t have a single fader just for the ride although should I upgrade I believe that SD has individual controls for every drum plus in-built effects and other fun stuff??? I will try highering the sensitivity on the pad though although I’m in danger of triggering the pad through the frame which happens although hardly noticeable.
I’ve reset the I/O buffer size to 64 as suggested and changed the settings to “built in input” and ticked all the boxes after a bit of Google research.
I’m in the EU so I’ll look in to crossgrades ( I think the term is upgrades here?? ) unless one of you guys would be so kind as to provide a link?
Once again, thanks a million. It’s just great to be playing drums again and get paid for the pleasure I’ll let you know how tonight goes…

I wouldn’t uninstall Logic, or anything.
Just fire up Solo instead of Logic.
You can have any number of software tools on your computer without damaging performance. You just use one or two at a time. So DON’T try to use Logic and Solo together.
Well, the gig was a lot better, especially that ride. I know what you mean by the slider now. I automatically thought of the mixer in Logic rather than the internal mixer in the TD-8’s brain. Thank you, it made a huge difference!
I downloaded Toontrack Solo to try it out though and when I try to open a new project it asks me to “Add a new drummer”. That’s fine but EZDrummer doesn’t appear in the selection box, it appears below in grey with a link to switch to 32 bit mode. That’s also great until I follow the instructions that don’t let me switch to 32 bit mode presumably because I’m alreeady in 32 bit mode??? Either way, at present Toontrack Solo isn’t working and I’m tired, frustrated and ready to throw my MacBook in the sea
well, that means you have not installed the latest version of EZdrummer. In fact you state so… version 1.1.4 has to be at least 2+ years old, it’s hardly reasonable to think an up-to-date version of solo would be happy with that situation 😉

I did install the latest version of EZDrummer BEFORE I installed Toontrack Solo
I just wondered right after I sent the reply if it all boils down to a simple restart although that wasn’t asked for when I first installed. So, I restarted and guess what?
It works
Thank you all, CIB

It seems Toontrack Solo still isn’t working as in, I can’t seem to trigger the sounds in EZDrummer from my TD-8 but I can play the midi grooves from EZDrummer using Toontrack Solo no problem. I’m closer to the holy grail but not quite there yet
I think it might be better for you to advise me Rouge as you’re the pro and I’m the novice. I have the MacBook as described above. Check this guy out ( and there are many others ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWLwUx_SEp0
He seems to have achieved what I’m trying to do using Cubase ( I’m using Logic but it’s the same principle ) and an Alesis Trigger I/O. Ok, now to the questions.
1. I use the CY8, CY5 dual trigger cymbals and the PD80 pads. It seems that these are compatible with the Alesis ( pretty standard fare ) and it would give me up to 20 ( 10×2 ) sounds which I could then trigger via EZ Drummer or SD. Correct? In effect it would suffice to replace my TD8 brain.
2. If I’ve read up correctly then SD have the luxury of individual editing on each cymbal & drum via seperate channels where they can be controlled easily, one channel, one drum/cymbal?
If this is the case then the cheapest way for me to get a great sound using the hardware that I currently have is to a) update to SD b) buy the Alesis and run the whole rig using either Toontrack Solo or Logic?
TD8 – Alesis – Mac – Logic/ToonSolo – desk?
In as many non-teckie words as you can please direct me to where I’d like to go please ( or anyone for that matter )
Thank you once again, CIB
