Hi,
Following the advice here — and I suppose I did do some hairpulling, but not as much as expected — I managed to re-install Superior Drummer with the “Custom” option to store libraries for it and EZ Drummer on a separate drive.
Then I installed EZD, and my 10 or so EZX’s, and the libraries showed up on the separate drive also. Wunderbar!
But now Pro Tools whinges on launch because my samples drive has more than 11 characters in it’s name (Sample Library).
My question: If I change the name of the drive, does that totally mess this up, or is there a way to change the name and still have Superior and EZD find their libraries?

RayC,
this really sounds strange. You should be able to call that drive just about anything as long as it doesn’t contain any “illegal characters”.
Anyways, changing the drive name will of course make the paths invalid but you can use the latest SoundMover utility to point to the folder containing the EZdrummer folder.
Superior 2 only to re-link the SDX libraries to their location.

John

Erm… I’m on Windows 7.

Sorry, I’m in the midst of transitioning to Windows. Forgot about the profile thing — that was way back in my Beta days.
So… am I knackered?
BTW, the message says something about authorizations possibly getting corrupted if they are on a drive with more than 11 characters. I’ve never heard of such a thing myself, but I get a popup every time I launch PT, and I’m willing to change the name if only to stop having to click “No” to launch.

Did a quick search on (“Pro Tools” “11 characters”) and it looks like it’s just talking about the names of the disk drives themselves.
Thankfully, those (normally) shouldn’t figure into the path for 99% of things on Windows — just the actual drive letters (C:, D:, E:, etc.).
Tested renaming my samples disk name here (Windows XP, unfortunately for your comparison) and didn’t have any trouble loading up the Toontrack plugins and associated sample libraries after the change.
Also unfortunately for your comparison though, I’m not on Pro Tools.

As godprobe tested, on Windows the drive letter is more important than the name of the drive.
IOW, you should be fine.

Well, thanks for that. So far I’ve been able to load PT and load the Superior and EZX samples. My AVID rep seems to think it should be OK (but he’s just a sales/marketing guy ) I have other sample libraries that I will be loading on the same drive, and some programs actually authorize the library itself, rather than the program, so this “http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=415999&ssdFilterCommunity15=1409&ssdFilterCommunity10=368&ssdFilter_SearchKeyWord=&ssdFilterCommunity3=1081&Hilite=” thing has me a little apprehensive.
Since a lot of my work has very tight deadlines, I tend to play by the rules as much as possible. If Avid says my daughter needs to have her head shaved to ensure plug-in compatibility, well, I’m out shopping for toques.
Let’s say, just for a lark, I do decide to change the name of the drive, if only to stop the darn popup. Would I be looking at a total reinstall of Superior, EZ-Drummer and 10 EZX’s?
Would just reinstalling Superior with the new EZ Drummer custom path take care of it?
Is there a registry key that I can edit in lieu of reinstalling everything?
EDIT: Oh, I see now that you actually renamed the drive with no issues. I’ll try that and see what happens. I suppose I could always change the name back. Thanks for your patience.
